Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby mbh911 » 04 Jun 2012 21:52

sadly I do see some of the devs/companies probably going to focus on microsoft first that is if microsoft throws $$$ at them.

I just hope more developers have an open mind with the wii u rather than saying "oh its basically the nintendo wii with a ds for a controller yadda yadda" etc. I just hate some of the new and rising developers these days because they always think negative things about nintendo unless their company is releasing a game on nintendo platforms then they act all nice and supportive of nintendo.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby GoNiners » 04 Jun 2012 22:04

I think this article demonstrates a big reason why SmartGlass exists. Does it duplicate WiiU functionality? No. But it can easily convince a lot of people that it does (or even surpasses it). Now those same people don't feel the need to purchase a WiiU if they have an x360.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

No. Apple has been doing this for a while now with the Ipad and Apple TV except even better. If Apple didn't stop Nintendo I can guarantee you Microsoft won't.

It's a trade off. Nintendo takes Xbox's controller design, Microsoft takes dual screen console gaming.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby Star Luigi » 04 Jun 2012 22:33

@sonofsicily

The XBox controller design was a rip-off of the Dreamcast's which was an evolution of the SNES' actually. This is honestly pretty pathetic of any attempt. Even worse than PS Mpve really...

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby bobafruit » 04 Jun 2012 22:49

The smartglass, or stupidglass just looks like something Msoft cobbled together in twenty minutes so that people on the internet would write "Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U controller obsolete?"

Even their presentation of it during the conference was half-baked, they have no vision for it and no idea why it exists, but it got some "journalist" to write an article.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby KingOfSafari » 04 Jun 2012 22:49

I think it's important to keep in mind that, where SmartGlass provides a small convenience or addition to the content you're enjoying, the Wii U GamePad is actually used to control your game. SmartGlass is a cool and natural evolution to navigation and integrating your console into your home, but it's not actually a game controller. I knew the moment Microsoft revealed it, folks would be quick to get critical of Nintendo. Bunch o' bullies.

Smart Phones and the PS Vita are more expensive!

Stupid argumentation in deed, because Wii U is Nintendo and Microsoft isn't! Who likes CoD and every year the same boring games, will not buy a Nintendo platform.

Sony showed some interesting titles like Beyond and the Wonder Book thing, but Microsoft had nothing to offer, except the same like every year.

Microsoft lost me the moment they mentioned "the tablet you already own" when I don't even own a smart phone. If I own a 360, I would need a phone or even tablet to take advantage of SmartGlass games. If I own a WiiU, I can take advantage of any and all games using the WiiU Game Pad... unless they used two I guess.

Still, this does mean that technically all three systems can somewhat manage WiiU GamePad style technology. I wonder how risky that is? As has been said, some companies or people, especially the smart phone gamer types, might lean towards the 360, ignoring the buttons and thinking "it can do the same thing" for example.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby scikoolaid » 05 Jun 2012 00:02

Sometimes I wonder if these writers even realize that Nintendo is a game company, contrary to competitors who are so many other things as a brand. You'd think there would be some kind of mutual respect to the entity that lives for your passion and focuses completely on you. At least IGN usually only refers to Nintendo as the Big N which is fitting enough regardless of the complaints you can have.
Take what you can as the government self-destructs under the pressure of growing debt, avoid and refuse higher taxes. The end is nigh.

No. It's not. It's a video game controller with a touch screen. That's like saying the DS is an iPhone with buttons.

Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U control

Postby Iwazaru » 05 Jun 2012 09:02

Well - it's the typical issue here. Just like Motion-Controlls with the Wii, the whole tablet-stuff IS part of the Wii U. MS and Sony have this as a "simple" Add-On.

I'd much rather use the larger iPad screen than the 4.nothin of the wiiu.
Don't sit there and peek around the corner and ask me stupid questions when I'm playing a video game like 'who's winning?' I'M winning. that's all you need to know.

What a shocker. A negative comment coming from the most notoriously anti-Nintendo poster on this boards.
