Molyneux says it's time to celebrate devs, AAA gaming not going anywhere

“Not so long ago, publishers suppressed a lot of the early interesting characters in the games industry. We use to have the Bitmap Brothers, and these were quite celebrated people, but it wasn’t in the publisher’s interest to celebrate these people. If more of these celebrities were trusted, then maybe we wouldn’t have so many sequels.” - Peter Molyneux

Molyneux also discussed the AAA game market, saying that it's definitely safe.

“It (AAA game market) is not going anywhere. There’s interesting research here comparing sales success with Metacritic scores. Publishers are becoming more and more obsessed with Metacritic bands. I think that’s going to squeeze the number of titles that come out. I think at E3 there were about 500 titles and last year we had 1000. I wouldn’t be surprised if that shrunk to sub 100 titles.”

WTH is he talking about? “It (AAA game market) is not going anywhere." followed up with "I think at E3 there were about 500 titles and last year we had 1000. I wouldn’t be surprised if that shrunk to sub 100 titles.”. So he's saying that the number of large games will go from 1000 to 100, but the AAA game isn't going anywhere? And WTH is a "Metacritic band"?

@Chris the king

You cant read context can you.

He's saying that the AAA market will shrink into like the Movie Industry there are only big budget titles coming from the same publishers and the rest are weeded out in favor of indie and AA titles.

That won't happen. Molyneux is a man who no one should ever listen to. His words mean nothing in gaming anymore.

Is he talking about total gaming? or just AAA?

Because one would mean the end of the industry

He's talking AAA. As budgets increase it makes sense that on the retail side were going to get a few AAA games and the AA/indie will be releagted to DD.

Its already currently happening. You have pubs like Sega reaffriming that thy plan to have a few Retail and mostly digital.

Rare good insight from Molyneux. People trust the Tim Shcaffers and Shigeru Miyamotos of the industry. Putting a well recognized face to a new IP trying to establish itself would likely help it tremendously.

As long as the quality is high, I would rather see 100 games at E3 instead of 1000.

Not like many of us are capable of buying 100 games in a year.
