I would say countries like Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Netherlands, and maybe a few others. USA, UK, and any other war mongering countries are not part of that list.

I would go with the Nordic countries in the western sense of "civilized" but really it all depends on how you define civilized.

If you mean a nation of high level of peace and stability, fairly technologically advanced, along with lower income inequality (with high taxes) than the Nordic countries such as Norway, Sweden, Iceland would be where you mean.

But there are some who would believe there are no "civilized" countries because humanity is only in the illusion of being so. They would say we are great with tools and build magnificent cities and video games, figured out how to conquer the Earth but we still destroy each other with impunity and are not far removed from our forest and cave dwelling ancestors.

As I said, it depends on how you define civilized.

Seconded. Our 'pip-pip jolly good' stereotyping belies a lot of anti-social behaviour and street crime here that seems to surprise people from other countries.

Seconded. Another Canadian here. We are basically just the US with less to be proud of and less to be ashamed of. (Unless humility is fundamental to being considered civilized. Then we might do alright. )

I don't think my opinion is as informed as it could be, but I think Germany is the most civilized country. I know their history isn't exactly a spotless record of pacifism and reason, but Germany has always struck me as a very industrious and intellectual nation when it isn't at war or attempting genocide.

I heard a story a few months ago about a day last May when half of Germany's power was supplied by solar-power plants. In my country, I hear stories on the news about how some daft old people in the rural areas surrounding the city I live in complain about power-generating wind turbines wrecking their view of the mountains. I feel as if I'm surrounded by a bunch of hairless apes while those that can see beauty in engineering and elegant solutions live elsewhere.

However, I think Germany, because of its both horrible and impressive past, shows that civility probably differs more between individuals within a nation rather than populations of people between them.

That's a thing of the past, more like the 1980s. Football now is much more family friendly than it has ever been. It's a bit of a lazy stereotype tbh.

Knife crime and other anti-social behaviour, binge drinking etc is way more prevalent.

Any country that's not a current war zone or with third world living conditions is probably the most 'civilised' at the moment. I'm not going to name any specific country though, because honestly there are a lot of good and bad things about every place on the planet. As someone from the UK, the country isn't exactly perfect, but then neither is any other country named in this topic.

And saying 'most cilivised' seems so culturally insensitive/absolutist.
