3D or no 3D?

Whats better then one screen? Well two screens of course! Current-gen portables inside: DS, Lite, DSi, DSXL, 3DS...

3D or no 3D?

Postby led-naruto » 02 Aug 2012 19:50

Do you use the 3D feature or not?

I can say that games like Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus Uprising, Kingdom Hearts 3D, Spirit Camera have a great atmosphere when played with the feature on, but there are times when you want to focus in the game that the 3D distracts you too much or you're in a bad position and you see a double image in the screen. Sometimes you want to save battery energy as well.

How do you play your 3D games?

the 3d on the 3ds is boss, i don't understand how people dismiss it so all-encompassingly. some games provide some crappy 3d, sure, but most games look so amazing with it on. and by being able to alter it's strength via the slider, it's really able to cater to anyone's preference!

Only 3D games I have right now are Mighty Switch Force and OoT3D. I play both in 3D.

I sometimes play the VC games with the Gameboy/3D, but I find it distracting and just play full screen.

I'll probably play every 3DS game and eShop game in 3D.

Personally, I never play in 3d. I don't know what it is, but I just don't feel a 3d effect when I turn it on, I just see the 2 images completely separate instead of being combined. Maybe I just have stereoblindness, I dunno. Also, when it's on, I feel a really weird throbbing sensation in my eyes as well, so that's what made me decide to give up on using the 3d. Though the good news is that I CAN perceive 3d space without it turned on, so I still have an easy time even in those 3d puzzle rooms in Super Mario 3d Land.

I play mostly in 3D with the 3D slider set half way. The only game I've experienced a really bad ghosting effect is OoT, so I tend to play with the 3D on a lower intensity.

The only game that has a 3D option but I don't play it in 3D is VVVVVV, the 3D isn't that impressive and was probably just tacked on to the game when it was ported to the 3DS.

I always go stereoscopic 3D and for the titles that allow customizable 3D levels (like 3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure), I set the 3D to my liking and go.

Though Nintendo already is giving up on 3D in games and won't make it a priority anymore, which is a shame as 3D can be great for games as long as it isn't treated as an afterthought.

3D is always on max unless my eyes are too tired from the need for sleep or if I know that I'll need to be frugal with battery life for a long time and won't have a way to recharge for a while.

The only game that disorients me too much on max 3D is Pilotwings Resort, where I just keep it at around half. I find the 3D in that game to be really dynamic compared to more recent releases, including Super Mario 3D Land and Kid Icarus: Uprising.

I use the 3D all the time. Now, when I play Wii or PS3 games without 3D I wish they had it. I realize most people don't have 3D TV's, which is the main reason most games are not released with the 3D option. However, I wish Nintendo and Sony would allow the consumers to chose. Some people like 3D while others don't. I would like to see 3D games on Wii U, but I don't think Nintendo will even bother.

if a company wants to put out a 3d game on the wiiu there is nothing stopping them. They just have to send the right signal to the tv across the hdmi. nothing really special about it.

I play just about every 3DS game with the 3D at max, but I do make some exceptions.

Pilotwings Resort is usually played at half intensity, at maximum the Mii and it's flying device are usually too much "in my face" for it to be very tolerable (yeah for once some "in my face" 3D actually feels a little too intense, I wish the Mii wasn't sticking out quite as much). Dead or Alive Dimensions is played in 2D because it improves the framerate. At maximum the framerate is only 30 fps, and while that's not terrible in any way, fact is that turning 3D off gives the game a smoother 60 fps just leaves me turning the 3D off whenever playing that one (which is why I was glad to hear Namco managed to get Tekken Prime working at 60 fps in 3D).

Ocarina of Time 3D is kind of a mixed bag. In some areas where the colors are nice and bright, and there's plenty of open space (like Hyrule field, Lake Hylia, and Gerudo Valley), the 3D effect is awesome, but sadly I get bad ghosting effects whenever something bright and colorful stands against something darker in color (like black or brown). This is especially noticeable in some of the game's darker colored dungeons like the Forest Temple, Shadow Temple, and Spirit Temple (the Twinrova boss fight in particular it gets bad enough for me to just play the fight in 2D). Admittedly this also happens in other games like Super Mario 3D Land, but not as badly (especially when I set 3D to be more "pop out" than "depth" based). I've also noticed this issue in 3D movies and TVs, so it's really more a problem with stereoscopic 3D as a whole and not a 3DS design flaw.

I like the 3D and wish there was more that used 3D to good advantage.

I think Nintendo's rule about not implementing 3D only features is stupid.

There is so much possible with the 3DS since it is the first mass market console with built in 3D. It's not like the PS3. So they can do a bunch of crazy 3D stuff, but it seems like they are backing away from 3D before even starting.

I always play with the 3D at max. Even though it doesn't really add anything per se, I find that 3DS games look better with it on compared to having it off.

I like how there was no problem with having DSi (camera)-only features.

I agree with everyone on Pilotwings, which I got recently when it dropped to 20 bucks at Gamestop: 3D is usually on max for me, but for Pilotwings, half is pushing it. Almost an awkward game for 3D, because half of the time your character is in the way of what you're doing, and the other half of the time, the scenery is so far in the background you can't see enough of each side for the 3D to be worth it.

I still use it in every game, though. Especially the GB-VC games, and in original-green/blur mode.

The one game I'd occasionally switch back and forth on was Dead or Alive: Dimensions, because it would play in a smooth 60fps when you turned it off. I don't really care about it being in 60fps. It's just that it feels like an actual console game when you do that, and it reminds me of playing DoA2 on my Dreamcast. But I enjoy the 3D more, I just like to switch back and forth on it occasionally.

I like playing with the 3D in full, but sometimes when the game play is getting intense I will tend to move the system a lot which kills the 3D effect and makes it look weird. When that happens, I turn it off, and will probably leave it off for pretty much the rest of the game. (unless I want to see what a cut scene looks like in 3D or something)

Really depends. If the 3D isn't "good" like in Tales of the Abyss- off. If it's really nice like in Kid Icarus Uprising, Star Fox 64 3D and Kingdom Hearts 3D- I turn it on. And there are times I'm not in the mood for 3D and want to conserve the battery power so off.

Yeah.. depends..

Re: 3D or no 3D?

Except for a minute or two now and then, I leave it off.

It adds a bit of visual interest and somehow makes the screen not seem quite so small, but has a number of downsides that keep me from using it. The biggest one is the terrible viewing angle that requires maintaining absolutely perfect positioning to avoid dimming, but there's also the big drain on battery life and the fact that the 3D trick never seems fully natural or solid to me, but an illusion playing a trick on my eyes so that they can't relax. There's also the fact that the 3D slider doesn't feel all that sturdy, so I don't want to use it all the time and loosen it up more. I've already have the 3D come on by accident sometimes because there's nothing keeping it locked in the off position.

I haven't really found the 3D very useful, either. The two games I've played in which the added depth perception seems to make a bit of difference are Mario 3D Land and Pilotwings Resort, but with the former that's because the camera angles are often terrible, and because of this in drastic need of some kind of depth cues, and with the latter that slight advantage is offset by the vehicle in the foreground sticking out too much from the background and making my eyes go buggy.

3d is ok....but at some point when the system starts showing its age...i hope nintendo starts not only releasing games but encourages developers to release games without 3d

without having to render 2 images for the 3d effect, they could squeeze about twice the power out of it. So at some point i would want them to release non 3d games that make use of all that extra power left over from not doing 3d.
