If Nintendo Land was a free download with every system, Wii U would have to have 16gb of flash memory, not 8.

although considering some of their other games' surprisingly small file sizes, nintendo land is probably around 300MB :-P

Do we know that 8 is the final number? and I could totally see them fiting nintendoland into less than 200MB of space, pretty simple textures, no voice, minimal HD fmv(if any).

I really disagree. New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a much less graphically busy game than Nintendoland was around 400mb. I'm guessing Nintendoland is going to be 2-3gb initially, in addition to whatever DLC they throw out with it.

all speculation from everyone. i dont know what the 2-3gb 'guess' is based on, but i don't agree that NSMBW is less graphically intense, especially considering how great it looks in HD.

i wouldn't be surprised if both ends are wrong.

I hope the DLC is free. I'm not too crazy about Nintendo doing DLC. Though hopefully they do it right and not just withhold content.

I doubt it'll be free. New parks as DLC featuring other Nintendo IP's around the time they launch.

- Super Smash Bros. Boxing!
- Kirby's Cotton Candy Showdown
- Mario Kart Bumper Karts

On second thought, that last one sounds awesome. Gimme.

Looking at my 3DS' touch screen, I wonder will the Wii U gamepad's screen be more scratch resistant? I don't want to have a gamepad with loads of scratches on it after a year. Has anyone who used the Wii U noticed if the screen is more study? I'd hope it would be but knowing Nintendo, they probably cheaped out :(

Considering the fact that Super Mario 3D Land is less than 400MB, there is no reason to assume Nintendo Land will be anywhere near 2-3GB. It's a Mii game, and most Mii games are less than 1GB. So at BEST, I could see Nintendo Land hitting that, but 2-3? I'll believe it when I see it.

I also expect NSMBU to be small, since NSMB2 is. HD is based on pixels, the games aren't going to be that much bigger just because LOLHD. I really doubt it would take up much room as a download.

Now Pikmin 3? I could see that being bigger, but NSMB and Nintendo Land being bigger than a gig is just laughable.

regardless of size ... nintendo should defiantly have nintendoland as a free download. and have at least 10 eshop offerings on launch; the money prints itself!

Like I said, if it's a download, it'll have to be on the flash memory when the system ships. It'd do a disservice to Nintendo's 'pick up and play' philosophy to make it a download out of the box. This would also require them to have more flash memory in the system.

there is more value to Nintendo in driving people to the digital store, than there is in servicing those few people without internet access who will be buying a WiiU in 2012.

Key Word: Nintendo

Also, DLC for games on Wii U will be handled in-game.

that's a huge mistake. having to put in a separate disc if I want to buy dlc is a pretty huge barrier in a digital store. it turns what should be a 2 min trip to the digital storefront for a couple different dlcs into a 10 or 15 min ordeal of menus and disc swapping.

It's how Wii games do it. It's how 3DS games do it. You accumulate funds and purchase items through an in-game store. You can even do that with almost every game nowadays.

Maybe so, but everywhere else also allows you to get it from the store directly. But you're right.

Agreed, but this is how Nintendo has been handling it. My Life as a King/Mega Man 9+10 do it on WiiWare and I know Theaterhythm does it on 3DS. So it's to be assumed that that is how the Wii U will handle it.

To be fair Theaterhythm probably has been in development before even Nintendo starting developing the 3DS patching system.

Mario Kart 7 could have had it's patch pushed in the Mario Kart Channel in-game, but that didn't happen. So I wouldn't rule out the possibility of some future games having DLC offered in the eShop instead of in-game.

Re: Wii U - Nintendo's Next Console

Postby KingBroly » 06 Aug 2012 01:00

So this past weekend I went to the Atlanta Wii U Experience. Played some games. Got some impressions

The Gamepad
- It's a very nice controller. Very light. Like...lighter than a Wii Remote. Yet it feels solid. Although it might just be less dense, making me think it's lighter. Clickable sticks are nice. L/R are nice, but ZL/ZR will definitely be used more. Nothing controlled using the NFC stuff though, so I don't know what to say about that. The screen was very cool as well, very clear.

The Gamepad Pro
- With the exception of the button placement, a superior d-pad and bumper buttons (L/R) it is 100% a copy of the 360 controller. Clickable sticks and all. There's not really a problem with the swapped R-stick and buttons either. It'll probably take some time getting used to, but I only played it once. Very solid controller.

Now for the games...

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge
- Remember the bad framerate and horrible screen tearing of the original? Well, these problems are non-existant in this version. Remember the other problems like horrible gameplay, mashy combat, QTE bullshit and overall bad design? Well those problems STILL EXIST in this version. Your Steel on Bone is a 2-button counter now instead of using it whenever. Whenever an enemy glows while near you, they are about to attack. Here, you hit X and then X or Y again to finish them. They Kamikaze you if you injure them while you get close. You can dash out of the way, change weapons, and whatnot. But overall, it just feels cheap. Enemies take too long to kill, the camera sucks, and it's just not tight; something you expect a Ninja Gaiden game to be. Of the 2 hours there, I was the only person to beat it, with everyone else leaving within 5 minutes out of disgust. It was also the only game to not have a line of people waiting to play it. Nintendo fans are wise to Team Ninja Dog's bullshit I believe.

Rayman Legends
- The game looks graphically amazing. It's less bland and clean like Origins was, and is a bit more dirty. The co-op mode seems fun, and it has probably the most unique Tablet controls I've seen in a game for the system thus far. It's pretty fast, so the attendant who helped me, was holding me back at some points because I was trying to speed run it. Oh well, it's fun. I don't think it's a $60 game though.

New Super Mario Bros. U
- U Super Asshole Bros is awesome. With the tablet controller, you can place blocks for your friends to jump on and reach new areas. The only problem is that blocks tend to not last long. So instead, being me, I decided to use these blocks for mischievous purposes. Ultimately picking off the 4 players one by one until they all died, leaving me to cheer and the attendant to give me an evil eye, saying I was supposed to assist them. I proclaimed that I was "assisting" them. As a player though, it's New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Wii Remote sideways controls. The Squirrel Suit is just the Propeller Suit but with more forward gliding. Another change I saw was pipe entering, which is now instant instead of waiting for everyone to try and enter it. Overall, I had the most fun with this game at the show.

Project P-100
- Probably the best visuals all day. It's a 60 fps action game, sort of like Mad World + Viewtiful Joe + Pikmin. You can attack with X, jump with B. Y recharges your battery. Here's the part that confused me: You can go into different unite forms by drawing the form on the touch screen and then hitting A. You use A to use that Special Attack, otherwise use X. The Pikmin influence is very minimal IMO, otherwise it's a very fluid game. The controls take some time getting used, like dodging, when and where to use Unite Attacks, etc. I hope the game has more content than Mad World, because it looks great. But overall, I didn't have enough time with it to say 'OMGAMAZING!'

Nintendo Land
Zelda Archery
- This was split into 2 parts, either with the Wiimote or the Archer. I was the archer. You hold up the tablet and move around to aim while using the Right Stick to pull back, aim and fire arrows at enemies and puzzle objects. It was fine until where we died at the end, which happened because the game is entirely on rails. At the end, my character just kept moving forward and I couldn't stop, putting me in the way of Moblin enemies, just killing me. I sort of hope this is fixed by the time it releases, otherwise that's a major bummer because it really felt like the game's fault.

Animal Crossing Candy Pickup
- Here, a team of 3 tries to get 50 candies total before being caught 3 times by the 2 Guards, which are controlled by 1 player on the tablet (I'll get to that in a bit). The players use Wii Remote controls, and stand on switches to get Candy to fall from trees. Some trees take multiple people to unlock the candy. You pick them up with 2, but they slow you down, so you can drop them with 1 to speed up. They'll stay there so you can come back and get them. Now, how does 1 player control 2 guards? It's simple. The Left stick controls one, the Right stick controls the other. All the while the map pans in and out between the two. I don't think there's any limitation on the distance between them, but it's so wild how this controls. It's a real mind bender, especially since no one beat the Guards, even though it looks like it'd be impossible for them to win. This one really won me over, as everyone who played/saw it enjoyed the living hell out of it.

As for what I saw from Nintendo Land...if it's not a pack-in, I'm not paying more than $30 for it. There might be more to it than that, but I can't see me being interested in it enough to pay full price for it.

Game and Wario
- This one...yeah, this one. If it weren't for Ninja Gaiden 3, this would definitely be the lowest on my list. It's not quite Wario Ware, nor is it quite like a Mario Party mini-game. The games also don't feel too fleshed out. I'd hate to see this one be a retail game as well, because it doesn't seem like it'd be picked out by most over Nintendo Land. The Skiing game was fun, having you hold the tablet sideways, controlling it with the Accelerometer while everyone else looks at your performance on-screen. I got a Gold Medal in it, one of only 2 who did all day. The Archery game seems okay as well, but time ran out on me before I could finish.

Pikmin 3
- Before playing Game and Wario I waited in line to play this. I'm sad to say that my time was cut short because the Wii Remote batteries died on me before I got a minute in. Everything worked except A and B, which is how you play Pikmin with those controls. It sucked because I really wanted to play it. Grahpically, it looks fine. Nothing outstanding to speak of, but I didn't have much time to see it.

Overall, I had fun. Probably not worth driving 4 hours to see, but fun. I feel better about it than I did before, but I still need a big game, either at launch or announcement before I pick one up. Also, I feel like they have to pack-in at least 1 Wii Remote with the system itself, as almost every game there supported it.

Here is interesting speculation from Stewox from NeoGAF about how the latency on HD TVs affects the latency (I am not sure if this is the right word) of the the Wii U GamePad:

not 100% copy. the 360 triggers are analog. the wiiu ones(on either controller) are digital.
