So this past weekend I went to the Atlanta Wii U Experience. Played some games. Got some impressions
The Gamepad- It's a very nice controller. Very light. Like...lighter than a Wii Remote. Yet it feels solid. Although it might just be less dense, making me think it's lighter. Clickable sticks are nice. L/R are nice, but ZL/ZR will definitely be used more. Nothing controlled using the NFC stuff though, so I don't know what to say about that. The screen was very cool as well, very clear.
The Gamepad Pro- With the exception of the button placement, a superior d-pad and bumper buttons (L/R) it is 100% a copy of the 360 controller. Clickable sticks and all. There's not really a problem with the swapped R-stick and buttons either. It'll probably take some time getting used to, but I only played it once. Very solid controller.
Now for the games...
Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge- Remember the bad framerate and horrible screen tearing of the original? Well, these problems are non-existant in this version. Remember the other problems like horrible gameplay, mashy combat, QTE bullshit and overall bad design? Well those problems STILL EXIST in this version. Your Steel on Bone is a 2-button counter now instead of using it whenever. Whenever an enemy glows while near you, they are about to attack. Here, you hit X and then X or Y again to finish them. They Kamikaze you if you injure them while you get close. You can dash out of the way, change weapons, and whatnot. But overall, it just feels cheap. Enemies take too long to kill, the camera sucks, and it's just not tight; something you expect a Ninja Gaiden game to be. Of the 2 hours there, I was the only person to beat it, with everyone else leaving within 5 minutes out of disgust. It was also the only game to not have a line of people waiting to play it. Nintendo fans are wise to Team Ninja Dog's bullshit I believe.
Rayman Legends- The game looks graphically amazing. It's less bland and clean like Origins was, and is a bit more dirty. The co-op mode seems fun, and it has probably the most unique Tablet controls I've seen in a game for the system thus far. It's pretty fast, so the attendant who helped me, was holding me back at some points because I was trying to speed run it. Oh well, it's fun. I don't think it's a $60 game though.
New Super Mario Bros. U- U Super Asshole Bros is awesome. With the tablet controller, you can place blocks for your friends to jump on and reach new areas. The only problem is that blocks tend to not last long. So instead, being me, I decided to use these blocks for mischievous purposes.

Ultimately picking off the 4 players one by one until they all died, leaving me to cheer and the attendant to give me an evil eye, saying I was supposed to assist them. I proclaimed that I was "assisting" them. As a player though, it's New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Wii Remote sideways controls. The Squirrel Suit is just the Propeller Suit but with more forward gliding. Another change I saw was pipe entering, which is now instant instead of waiting for everyone to try and enter it. Overall, I had the most fun with this game at the show.
Project P-100- Probably the best visuals all day. It's a 60 fps action game, sort of like Mad World + Viewtiful Joe + Pikmin. You can attack with X, jump with B. Y recharges your battery. Here's the part that confused me: You can go into different unite forms by drawing the form on the touch screen and then hitting A. You use A to use that Special Attack, otherwise use X. The Pikmin influence is very minimal IMO, otherwise it's a very fluid game. The controls take some time getting used, like dodging, when and where to use Unite Attacks, etc. I hope the game has more content than Mad World, because it looks great. But overall, I didn't have enough time with it to say 'OMGAMAZING!'
Nintendo LandZelda Archery- This was split into 2 parts, either with the Wiimote or the Archer. I was the archer. You hold up the tablet and move around to aim while using the Right Stick to pull back, aim and fire arrows at enemies and puzzle objects. It was fine until where we died at the end, which happened because the game is entirely on rails. At the end, my character just kept moving forward and I couldn't stop, putting me in the way of Moblin enemies, just killing me. I sort of hope this is fixed by the time it releases, otherwise that's a major bummer because it really felt like the game's fault.
Animal Crossing Candy Pickup- Here, a team of 3 tries to get 50 candies total before being caught 3 times by the 2 Guards, which are controlled by 1 player on the tablet (I'll get to that in a bit). The players use Wii Remote controls, and stand on switches to get Candy to fall from trees. Some trees take multiple people to unlock the candy. You pick them up with 2, but they slow you down, so you can drop them with 1 to speed up. They'll stay there so you can come back and get them. Now, how does 1 player control 2 guards? It's simple. The Left stick controls one, the Right stick controls the other. All the while the map pans in and out between the two. I don't think there's any limitation on the distance between them, but it's so wild how this controls. It's a real mind bender, especially since no one beat the Guards, even though it looks like it'd be impossible for them to win. This one really won me over, as everyone who played/saw it enjoyed the living hell out of it.
As for what I saw from Nintendo Land...if it's not a pack-in, I'm not paying more than $30 for it. There might be more to it than that, but I can't see me being interested in it enough to pay full price for it.
Game and Wario- This one...yeah, this one. If it weren't for Ninja Gaiden 3, this would definitely be the lowest on my list. It's not quite Wario Ware, nor is it quite like a Mario Party mini-game. The games also don't feel too fleshed out. I'd hate to see this one be a retail game as well, because it doesn't seem like it'd be picked out by most over Nintendo Land. The Skiing game was fun, having you hold the tablet sideways, controlling it with the Accelerometer while everyone else looks at your performance on-screen. I got a Gold Medal in it, one of only 2 who did all day. The Archery game seems okay as well, but time ran out on me before I could finish.
Pikmin 3- Before playing Game and Wario I waited in line to play this. I'm sad to say that my time was cut short because the Wii Remote batteries died on me before I got a minute in. Everything worked except A and B, which is how you play Pikmin with those controls. It sucked because I really wanted to play it. Grahpically, it looks fine. Nothing outstanding to speak of, but I didn't have much time to see it.
Overall, I had fun. Probably not worth driving 4 hours to see, but fun. I feel better about it than I did before, but I still need a big game, either at launch or announcement before I pick one up. Also, I feel like they have to pack-in at least 1 Wii Remote with the system itself, as almost every game there supported it.
