DS Redesign Rumors

I'm not ruling out anything, but placing the D-pad and face-buttons below the start and select, near the bottom of the system, is poor designing and would only cause hands more cramping. I don't think Nintendo would place them there.

Design-concepts need to be patented in general, just for protection.

Ok, i just saw this baby on youtube and it looks pretty real and pretty damn awesome...so what i'm asking is...will anyone buy this ds remake? i said after the lite i wouldnt buy the next remake but this thing is...damn sexy.

I have a feeling the next DS will feature sd card support instead of GBA so you could play NES, SNES,GEN,TG,NG,MS games on it by copying them from your wii to a card. also a possible tilt feature like the i phone touch could be cool too.

It for sure will have some sort of virtual console support.
It might even go so far to the next level that you wont be able to buy games for it. Just digital distribution.

I dont personaly like the new direction, if the rumors are true, that nintendo would be taking the DS redesign.

i dont like the incoperation of a camera, but i do like the idea of a media player ( although i might expect it to only support a nintendo specific format)

does anyone else feel worried about this. the idea of incorperating a camera as a interface or input would separate games playable from the "next itteration" and current iterations (NDSL and NDS).

i just get the feeling that this move involves nintendo moving in direction that im not just yet comfortable with.

anyone else have any thoughts on this?

What direction is that? About a year ago, I believe, I made a post on NSider that was really in-depth about what I wanted Nintendo to do with the DS. Seeing this makes me really happy. Though there could be limitations like a Nintendo specific format like you said. (That would hurt. If I can't put my mp3's on this thing what's the point?) But besides something like that I'm very happy to see this. Having a Nintendo device that played music would be sweet in my case. I wouldn't need the PSP anymore, and I just got a bigger memory stick for it too... Anyway, having my games and music in the same place would be great, plus a camera and maybe GB V.C. games!? I've been meaning to play SML 2 again.

As for games incorporating the camera, whatever. They probably wouldn't be that great anyway. And if the camera was used in a big game it would probably be too gimmicky to really matter (think GBA in the Wind Waker). I'm sure one or two good games using it specifically would come out, I just read in an article GoNintendo linked to (http://gonintendo.com/?p=57566" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) that Miyamoto himself was interested in camera games again, so who knows? Look at the mic and base it a little off of that, I guess.

Well .. good thing I didn't buy my new DS (on the basis of this rumor) . Looks pretty solid though, hopefully it's true . But I don't want to carry a big bulky hand held, and going by the "rumored" screen post on gonintendo.com, it seems like that's what we'll get . And hopefully they drop the price of the DS lite for the holiday season (they would make a lot of money which is good for the gamers as well as the company).

Well, I had a bit of a debate with Jet Pilot on the comments section when the latest rumor came out. Basically, my feelings right now are that I'm extremely excited for the possibilities if the new DS has what they're saying it has. I don't know much about technology, but I REALLY like the idea of it supporting SD cards for use with gaming, photos, and music. The current DS format only allows for 256 MB of storage space, whereas SD cards are easily up to 8 gigs. (Sony's UMD's hold 1.80 gigs.) I imagine Nintendo wouldn't do something like this because of increased chance of piracy, right? (I'm sure I'm sounding like an idiot right now.) But otherwise, is there anything wrong with that from a technology standpoint? I'd really like to know... But if I could carry around a couple gigs worth of music, take and store a couple gigs worth of photos, play some big games, and transfer and play some VC games...you can bet I'll be putting some money down on one of these suckers the day they're announced!
(This is so my favorite time of the cycle: when the rumors of the next iteration start to fly!)

^ This is also my favorite time . Debates are great, and the bring out the true character in people . What I have to say about your post is that the idea of a redesign is great . If it came with web browser built in then it would be better, since I wouldn't have to leave my bed . Camera ? perfect, maybe we can really see some REALLY innovative products from nintendo (IE voice chat, video chat, etc.) . the gigs of music thing isn't really my thing (i'll probably carry anime and japanese shows) .

The whole thing I don't like about this whole redesign thing is the price point . Not of the new one, but of the current DS . I wish it was 100 dollars .. the hardware in it is less expensive than the ps2 i assume, and it's stayed at that price point for awhile now.

OK E3 is coming and everyone loves to speculate. Me included. The mystery *SHIVERS*.

So it's been going on five years already since the DS was originally released. And personally speaking I haven't had this much fun since the N64. The DS has brought us some of the best games over the past years and has sold an incredible amount.

But Nintendo's R&D budget has risen over the past year and we all know it's hardware related. Sony is set to unveil the PSP: Go or so we are to believed. Most of these things never come to light and are merely rumours but this one seems to hold a bit more salt with a few industry people speaking about it. (yes I'm taking the #*"£%)

So what do you all want to see from a new handheld.

I know I want it to have some of the key features that the DS has....Dual Multi touch Screens, Wide screen on top please....camera at least 2MP for video chat, Built in flash drive and not 512MB, Motion sensing.

Also id like good software built into the system....Nintendo is an entertainment company. Please can I have some things that I can actually use.

No offense, but there's no way Nintendo will announce a new handheld this E3. Not when they just released the DSi. They would be taking away many potential customers, because they'll think, "Oh, if a much much better handheld will be coming out next year, I might as well wait!" And Nintendo cares too much about its money to risk losing some (and who can really blame them, they're a business, and like most businesses, they want as much money as possible).

A new handheld might be announced next E3 however, because as you stated, the DS is already about 5 years old (and by then it'll be almost 6). But even that might be a stretch, especially if DSiware and DSi retail software really take off...

As for what I would like to be in a new handheld...well you guys gave me a whole bunch of ideas, so I'll steal some of them if you don't mind.

A 2mp camera (or better), both screens widened (why stop with one?), built in rumble (it's about time handhelds started having rumble built in), ability to connect to any hotspot a laptop can, motion sensing (I'd be fine without it tbh, but it'll be nice to have nevertheless), ability to take videos with your camera and add movies to your system, and...I can't think of anything else that I would really want. I'm pretty satisfied with my DSi actually.

EDIT: Oh, and an Internet Browser that can stream video and audio (or if that can be created as an update for the DSi's browser, even better!).

yeah, it's a good ol' fashioned PS2 situation, how do you gently kill a giant without slowing your income? The DS/i has a good 2-3 years, I'd say, I'd expect an unveiling next E# and then a release 1-2 years later. As far as the R&D expenses, I'd say Wii successor is probably soaking up money, I think Nintendo wants to make something that can compete with PS4/Xbox *whatever the hell they're gonna do* hardware wise but still be small and cost-effective, and that costs a whole lot of money.

Yah, I think it will make absolutely no sense to release a new DS on this year's E3 or the next one. They can't just make new ones every 1-2 years. That would be totally annoying for their customers.
I think the DSi is perfectly fine right now.

I figured that since the DSNext (2, ii, whatever) rumors are coming out, we should have a place to post the best information.

To keep costs down some features were left out of the DS. Maybe next time, he said, he will be able to include a tilt sensor for gyroscopic control. For now, he is focused on double screens.

As the time passed by, Nintendo started to work on the successor of its handheld console with a debut planned for late 2010 [Tokyo Game Show 2010?]. According to our confidential sources, Nintendo is going to use Tegra System-on-Chip processor for the successor of DS/DSi handheld console. Unlike the current design, nVidia offered a single-chip proposal to Nintendo, a company famous for keeping the hardware platform absolutely simple.

The rumoured DS2 development kits are in the hands of select developers in Japan - and include a motion-sensing function, CVG can reveal.

The biggest of the firms working with the device is The Pokemon Company, which CVG understands was the first business to be offered the dev kit.

A CVG insider at a third-party studio currently toying with DS2 said he was aware that "a handful" of other developers had been given the hardware on a trial basis.

However, Nintendo informed him that it was merely the first version of what will become the finished product. The platform holder is asking those trialling the hardware for feedback - but our man is certainly impressed.

"It's genuinely the best thing I think I've ever worked with," he said. "I can tell you that it's got a 'tilt' function that's not dissimilar to iPhone, but does a lot more. We know that The Pokemon Company are getting special attention with it."

However, before our source went tight-lipped, he said he didn't expect the hardware to be shown at GDC.

"Any kind of March announcement wouldn't fit with the timeline I understand the second DS to be on," he added.

He wouldn't tell us any more for fear of being rumbled, but we'll keep digging.

So there you are folks, a motion-sensing handheld with definite Pokemon goodies on the way.

Unsurprisingly, a Nintendo rep told CVG today that they wouldn't comment on "rumour or speculation".
