you would like to skype with someone who is standing next to you?
the purpose of skype is to talk over the internet, so yeah, you have to be around a wifi-spot. thats the whole point of it.
its kinda nice. on the ds, VOIP is already possible. not official, though, but via homebrew-applications.

Didn't Metroid Prime Hunters have that? I don't own it so I'm not 100% sure. I thought you could talk via mic before a game set up.
