Yay! Nay! Maybe... Whats you're stance? I know this is kind of a sensative topic for some people, so don't get in too heated of arguments.

I think that if given the oppurtunity, one should always purchase games that they want. However, if you want an obscure game for some obscure platform that you know you will never find anyways, you might as well just get an emulated version. If you just want to test a game out to see if you want to buy it and renting is a major inconvenience for you, then getting a pirated version isn't all that bad. Basically, if your excuse for getting a pirated game is because "I don't have the money for it," then you should just suck it up until you do.

Let me rephrase my question. by pirated, i mean not emulation, but putting a modchip in a console and playing burned games/homebrew on it.

I pretty much oppose any kind of pirating nowadays. I used to download music (not very much, but I did it nonetheless), but I've since completely stopped.

I got into a pretty heated debate with someone on the Nintendo Nsider forums about whether or not pirating is morally good or bad regardless of whether or not it's illegal. I was arguing that it was morally wrong because it was stealing (despite the fact that I was still doing it at the time). The other guy was arguing that if someone discovers a way to make copies of a loaf of bread for free that wouldn't be stealing. As soon as he made that horrible analogy, I realized I didn't want to be anything like him. I stopped cold turkey after that.

I against moding a console to play burned games. But, im a big fan of importing. So im a little inbetween i gusse.

I think of it as more of a loyalty thing. I buy Nintendo Games to help Support Nintendo, even though my money goes to an EB or gamestop, if i buy enough, they buy more so forth and so on.
And, while i dont think pirated games cuts all that much into any one company's profits, i do think its just a disrespectful thing to do. When so many people work so hard for so long, why not show a pea's-worth of gratitude and pay for the game?

some tomes i must resort to pirating other things but never games...ever
considering i want to be a game designer it would be like stealing from my family.
the only reason i pirate music (very rare...so far 2 songs and one movie) is because i have looked for it in store for ever and i can never find it...so obviously if they are not selling it then they will not lose money(the things i get are so hard to find)

I voted "maybe", for one reason, and one reason only: playing imports that are not available in your home territory.

To me, there is no excuse for playing rips of games* available for purchase in your home territory.

* (that you don't have the original of -- backups, in my mind, are OK, provided you bought the original!)

I'd rather buy the games. I prefer having the case and all that stuff. I wouldnt want just the disc with the name of the game written on in pen.
I like having the actual product :)

pretty much the same here, however, there are so many things that people pirate which are actually wrong... many people photocopy stuff thats copyrighted etc and thats equally wrong... but still back to the subject i have no pirated games and dont intend to!

I've never modded a console...but I can understand why people do it...I mean the sheer
price of buying games for what 3 consoles?, then theres music and films people are usually intoa s welll, it's impossible to see get 10% of what you would like to play watch or listen to.

I do have M3 for the DS, Only reason I got the DS was because this is availible, I know some may not like that, but paying for all the DS obsure games you'd like to play on top of buying wii games or w/e.

LEt's jsut sya I buy the wii games and have stoped buying DS games..... I think thats fair.

Modding doesn't bother me at all. I understand that it is immoral to rip games but, i can't help altering old consoles. Like my xBox, it is sweet after I put in a mod chip and ripped all my games (no i didn't rip any I didn't pay for).

Honestly, I really really don't like to steal games.

1) My computer isn't really portable enough to play GBA roms

2) It doesn't feel right

3) Slowdowns and rom glitches will make me delete it instantly

I only download games that I can't get ahold of in my area. At the time, I wanted to play electroplankton really really bad, and you couldn't get it unless you bought it online or went to the nintendo world store. I downloaded the rom. (respectfully, deleting it after 24 hours) I wanted it so badly that I went to the nintendo world store just to get it.

I also download games for the purpose of "renting" them for 24 hours. My mom knows what I am doing and she doesn't allow music, games, or software to be stolen. She usually reminds me to delete the game. She also checks the game rating on every game I buy. I give my mom kudos.

I plan on buying an R4 so I can get the most of my "renting". I also love ds homebrew. It is almost as cool as the ipod touch homebrew.

I don't like to pirate games, and frankly I would have no clue how to mod a console, plus I like to support the video gaming industry. But I don't mind using emulators to play snes games or N64 games, since you can't buy those in stores anymore.

Is it wrong to pirate if you plan on buying it upon release?

Postby Neader » 19 Apr 2010 21:27

What do you think?

I download leaked music all of the time, but I buy a lot of vinyl as well. Does this make me a bad person? I still am giving them money, I'm just getting an advance in my purchase. They're not losing any money, and I'm more of a satisfied customer.

Thoughts on the topic in general?

Well, on principle yes. Also, logistically, you might hear/play/see whatever it is and decide you don't like it enough to go through with the purchase, and they've just lost money.

Now, I've "tried before I buy" twice in my life through piracy, with the promise to myself to delete the ROM, which ever choice I make, but the fact is, if I hadn't liked what I played, then someone would have lost money.

That's a point though. You shouldn't be expected to give money to someone if they haven't produced a product that you think is worth it. In that respect it could end up becoming a sort of quality-control. That's one way of looking at it.

on the other hand, you wouldn't be pirating it if it's not something you want.

if you want it, buy it. if you can't buy it, wait until you can.

Now let me add a twist.

I don't like a band enough to buy the CD, however once I download it I will buy the vinyl.

What now? They're actually gaining music through my illegal downloading now.
