stolen limited edition Pokemon dsi

Does anyone know if it is possible to track or locate a stolen dsi? My six yr old son had gotten his dsi nearly a year ago and someone stole it from him recently with the super scribblenauts game I just bought him. my family has had some devastating blows this summer starting with my dog bring diagnosed with diabetes and her recovery from that was going well and my son took lots of pictures of her that he stored on his dsi and unfortunately she was mauled and had to be put down on my birthday and we would frequently sit in my bed at night and he would put all his pics on a slide show and we would remember are beloved pet of ten yrs that was taken from us in such a tragic way. I wish I could afford to just replace his dsi but I can't and to top it off the pics he had on there are irreplaceable, I don't know who is more upset over the loss of his device, I can only hope that the individual who stole it has a heart and will return this item to us because of the priceless pics on it. My son has adhd and some behavioral problems and this device and his playstation have helped him immensely in ways I wasn't able to he uses his console as an outlet for everything from frustration to happiness and looking at his tear eyes as I searched my entire home where his unit was when it disappeared just breaks my heart. Myself I wish there were Moe I could do but I just had back surgery two months ago and this state of limbo is depressing. I wish ppl were not so heartless or desperate to hurt my kids and myself anymore than we have already for the past few months. Luckily the receipt I kept when buying the consol contains the serial number so if anyone has any info they could pass along that might help me locate the stolen unit it would be greatly appreciated, I have already tried looking at local area ads online for units for sale but no luck yet, and even those units are out of my price range at the moment. Thanks in advance for any info or help hope you all have a good weekend and never have to experience the misfortune me and my family have endured.

How did someone steal it? Did they literally just take it from him or did he leave it somewhere and then it was gone?

You can't really do anything other than file a stolen item report with police or something, and then send Nintendo a copy of that and they will at the very least get you a new DSi. I don't know that it will be the Pokemon one, not sure how that all works, so maybe. Probably won't get the game back and definitely not the pictures, though. That's the best I got.

Copied from http://www.ehow.com/how_12169328_track- ... rvice.html:

1. Look up the serial number for your Nintendo DSi. If you didn't write it down when you acquired the device, check the purchase receipt and the box in which it was packed. If you no longer have these items, contact the store where you purchased the device, as it is possible that the serial number was recorded at the time of purchase.

2. Open your Web browser and visit online auction sites such as eBay, uBid.com and Overstock.com. Use the search tool on each site and type “Nintendo DSi” into the input field. Sort the results chronologically and review the most recent postings. Examine the pictures for each product listed and try to discern the serial number. If you find a Nintendo DSi with your serial number, contact local law enforcement.

3. Review online ads posted on major classified websites such as Craigslist. Search for recent Nintendo DSi listings. Look at the pictures and try to read the serial numbers. If pictures aren’t available, email the advertiser and request pictures. If you find a Nintendo DSi with your serial number, contact your local authorities to recover your stolen device.

If this doesn't work, I guess contacting Nintendo is the only other option.
