Dear God. Online, this game can get real frustrating real fast.
I thought I was just imagining it, but most of the guns are definitely much stronger than in CoD4, especially the rifles. Should a Scar-H kill my enemy with a single short burst to the legs? I certainly don't think so. The Commando perk is certainly overpowered. I can understand giving more melee range, but this doesn't mean I should be able to lunge forward like a bull on uppers.
I also can't help but feel that the maps aren't very well designed. There's flanking point after flanking point and hiding spots are overly abundant. Some of the maps, like Derail and Wasteland, have cover spots that are too far apart and, as a result, leave wide open spaces to get killed in. I've died more times by blind side kills than actually engaging an enemy. The spawn system is inconsistent. At times, it's completely fine, at others it's a complete nightmare. I've had times where I've died by kills from behind than actually engaging an opponent.
So. Add the overpowered guns with low health and health regenration, the bad design of the maps, and a funky spawn system, and it comes down to a game that encourages, and almost rewards, camping. It's quite saddening to know that most of my 5-11 killstreaks come from planting a claymore and sitting in one spot than tactically choosing my spots across maps.
MW2 online is still fun. I've put 27 hours into it, so it must be doing something right. There's still that thrill of running around with a lightweight class, bursting into a room of campers, guns blazing, and being rewarded with an AC-130 (even if it is mostly luck). There's still that thrill of two collateral headshots, or calling in 3 Harriers in a game. But bad luck, or bad teammates, can easily strip the online down to its ugly, bare, badly designed roots.
Split-Screen is pretty fun, though. >_>
