Square Enix's new Engine

Postby Hisiru » 07 Jun 2012 02:06

Hey guys! This isn't really new but at least it's a good thing and makes me wonder if the WiiU will have future Final Fantasy titles.

Square Enix is preparing a new engine called "Luminous" for the next generation of consoles and they just released a new video showing real time graphics, just take a look:

Now you're going to say "NO WAY it will run on next gen consoles except PC  " but this engine will run on any device that can handle programmable shaders (which the WiiU is capable of 8) ).

Last year they announced this engine would work even on x360 and PS3 but they were also trying to make it work on Wii and 3DS (which doesn't handle programmable shaders). If the x360 and PS3 will have the engine, the WiiU will probably have it too (but of course, we can't expect to see those graphics on a console yet).

Neogaf has a topic talking about this new engine: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=477196

This makes me wonder if the WiiU wil be able to run the next Square Enix's engine along with the next Final Fantasy (or Square Enix) game. :o

It could be the most beautiful thing in the world and it would STILL suck like 13 and 14... Unless someone proves me wrong.

Well, I think Final Fantasy 13 is a piece of useless garbage. It's one of the worst RPGS I ever played but I think Square Enix's support will be good for the WiiU.

I miss the old Square Soft. Too bad they don't even know how to give a good story, characters, gameplay or even a RPG anymore. I mean, Final Fantasy XIII lacks so many RPG elements and what are they giving us? Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Final Fantasy XIII Versus

How is it different from the original Final Fantasy XIII? What can I expect? :|

It's action RPG if I recall correctly... that's expectable. If you mean "expect" as something you really want to see that would amaze, then nope, sorry.

I honestly can't wait to see what the ps4 and 720 will be capable off, they are probably going to use current high end pc hardware, and you take that, and unchain it from a big OS and all that... will be something to see. lets hope the software lives up to that hardware potential.

Watching this Final Fantasy demo and Star Wars 1313 in 1080p makes them look amazing. You can hardly tell the difference between real life and video games anymore. If the PS4/ 720 are going to look like this it really will be Wii all over again, in regards to the Wii U. However, I really don't think the graphical leap will be this huge. Development costs would be enormous, the systems would cost a ton of money, and games would go up in price. Maybe this is two gens from now, as opposed to next gen.

Believe me, PS4/x720 games won't look like that. It's probably running on a extremely high end PC.

Right now, the price for a PC capable of running graphics like this is probably something higher than $1000?

I believe you will either be disappointed (I don't think consoles will even reach current gen high end PC levels for now) or pay for a very high price (because it will be very expensive).

Oh... I can't say I am an action RPG type of guy. I actually enjoyed my time with Soma Bringer (DS), Demon's Soul etc but I doubt Square Enix will bring a good FF game again (for my tastes), but thanks for the explanation.

I think you should save some money for a high end PC if you want to satisfy your inner graphics whore, but I doubt Square Enix would make a main (and nom-online) Final Fantasy game for PC.
Also, very funny signature!

eh, you could build a pc that could run that.. for about 7-800. next year that cost will probably drop down to about 500$. and sony/ms will buy parts in massive bulk getting a steep discount.

give me two seconds. I'll edit this post with some stuff.

this is just a guess... but... I think a PC made of the following could run something close to that demo.

cpu+mobo 140
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDeal ... mbo.951825

video card 400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814130782

ram 16GB 100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820145347

640$. when the price of a gtx690 comes down to earth I'd use one of those. and if you wanna spend a little more up the cpu to a i7. but the cpu is not really a bottleneck anymore.

lol? It's much cheaper than I thought.... Now this is even more of a surprise than the video itself

Thanks for the tips I will probably build a gaming PC next month and this will certainly help me.
