Gran Turismo 5 time trial/contest demo

Postby cortjezter » 19 Dec 2009 01:53

anyone play this rubbish yet? i want to gouge my hands out of their wrist sockets after enduring this steaming pile.

the wireless (dualshock) controller is virtually incompatible with this game; steering is herky-jerky and imprecise. wish i still had my GT Force wheel, but i don't, and as a Turismo veteran, this was a huge disappointment in terms of handling... the other games and the prologue are at least usable without a fancy driving wheel.

i used to own a 350z, and while the sound is accurate, i don't recall my car handling like a melting turd on ice skates. i dig the demonstrated physics to a point when it comes to some of the weight shift, but they seem very inaccurate for the Z cars, with overly pronounced understeer and body sway, practically non-existent torque, and a strange tendency to spin out at speeds above 70mph, even on straightaways.

clearly this isn't a proper demo, and not even an accurate slice of what the final game will include, but it's baffling with PD's attention to detail that such a clumsy version would be used... for a contest no less. it's like holding an origami contest using bath cloths.

still frothing for the full GT5, but for now, this has no place on my ps3's drive. back to prologue and hd concept for me.

Ouch, I've not downloaded the contest yet but I might not bother now. You're not the only one who didn't like the new physics system Cort, I've seen it bitched about a lot on the IGN boards. I really hope the final game pulls things together. The GT series is one of my favourites and I've really been looking forward to 5.

yeah, this demo is locked into using their "professional" physics (you can't really change any options other than MT/AT), which must be like Neo's vision of the Matrix, except behind the wheel of a car.

never had any issues with previous GT games, even using the more advanced settings, and i could do basic drifting, etc with my real 350z, so i do have a little knowledge about how this car SHOULD drive ;)

just hope that whatever the shortcoming is here is either not present in the final, or is ironed out!

I played it and I think it's pretty bad. I don't know what they were thinking with this thing but it's not a good way to promote the game. Where's the car damage like they promised? Give me some options.

yeah... tell me about it.

some people on other forums seem to be defending it saying that it's not a "real" demo, which is sort of true considering it is meant as a contest tool, but any playable version of a game released to the public before its final release IS a demo for all intents and purposes; at least that's how it is received anyway.

and that's what marketing a brand is about: being conscious of each and every point of contact a consumer has with your brand. normally, gran turismo is a prestige brand... every time someone sees or uses it, it's a highly polished product. unfortunately this point of contact was extremely sub-par, and yes, i place this well below their HD Concept "tech demo" from 3.5 years ago. it's like if apple had been talking about and showing pics of the ipod for years, but then released the zune prototype a few months before the final. baffling.

anyway, it doesn't look horrible to me; not great. but it plays like utter garbage. physics tech demo or not...if my 350z ever actually drove like that, i wouldn't be alive now to tell. i can say with 100% certainty that a Z does NOT drive like this demo in real life, on or off the pavement.
