interested in starting a US VG lending by mail group?

Postby geozeldadude » 27 May 2010 12:21

the way this would work is that there would be a place (prob. not on the messageboard as it would get cluttered) where people would post the list of games they would be willing to lend out. then people can set up temporary trades via USPS.

why would you want to do this? this would be a good way for people not interested in shelling out money for a regular VG rental service to try out games that they wouldn't necessarily want to buy right away (or older games that wouldn't be on the rental services anyway), and a good way to get some use out of games you want to keep in your collection and don't want to sell but that you're really not going to play for a long while.

reply to the thread if interested. if even a few people are up for it i think it would still be worth doing. let me know what you think.

Sorry can't trust this sounds like a cool idea but what if someone takes your game and doesn't return it or something. There is no way you can get it back. Unless you lived in the same city or something and had the time to drive to whoever's home and get it back. But then you don't know if that person is nice he could be a rapist or murder.
Finally got a PS3 sooo add me if you want. :)

well there's def. a certain amount of risk that you won't get your game back, but the group would end up being small and we would quickly find out who's reputable and who's not. and of course gonintendo fans must be more reputable than average, right? ;)

I understand your interest and it would be a cool idea if it worked. But in regards to your statement that I have bolded, are you willing to sacrifice one (or more) of your games just to see who is "reputable?" I'm sure not. Like I said, good idea, but I've unfortunately been taken advantage of too many times in dealings over the internet, so I'd rather not take my chances.

well, if there are at least some people willing to take the chance to find out who's reputable, then maybe other people will join in later.

Then what is in it for those people? They've just lost a game and will have some serious trust issues after. This is why we don't use real humans when we crash test new cars, we use dummies. Sure, there's a chance they will survive the crash, but I can't see anyone willing to step up to the plate.

i would recommend if anyone wants to do this that you trade with people who have more than a short, recent history on the site, and also work with some kind of escrow service if you're really paranoid or concerned about a specific trade.

yeah, it doesn't seem like anyone's really going to go for it. i've had some success with a similar group, but it was with lending manga/comic books which are considerably cheaper than video games. long-time members of a relatively small community like this one would have an advantage versus even more-complete strangers, although i'm not a regular enough to know if people know each other that well in general on the messageboards. if i were really into this as a long-term project i would donate a certain amount of "insurance" money to get the ball rolling where if anyone did flake out i'd replace the game from some backup funds, but i don't know that i'm that interested in taking it on as a social experiment.

how about this for another idea: if anyone has any game they pretty much just want to get rid of, they can throw it into the collective "pool of lending" on the offhand chance that anyone else would want to play it. that could be kind of interesting, although i don't know if we'd get anything worth playing. Rugrats Search for Reptar anyone? ;)

No thanks. If I feel that a game is worth playing, I buy it. The developer earned my money, they deserve it. That's why I rarely trade games with friends, and never buy used copies. Besides, I agree with the others... this is a little too shady to be doing with random people over the internet.

I don't want to risk losing a game or having someone scratch it up or something.
