In regards of methods of storytelling I consider a breakthrough:
Best JRPG Story: Nier
Haven't played thoroughly Bioware games or Assasins' Creed to comment about them.
Most original studios:
Grasshopper Manufacturer and Platinum Games for the variety of IPs they've created this generation.
Best implementation of motion controls:
Metroid Prime 3, Zack and Wiki, and Resident Evil 4 (<- why didn't more developers make more 3rd person shooters?)
Most original concept in Wii: DEADLY *FUCKING* CREATURES and Fragile
Most disappointing: Castlevania Judgment (I can only dream bringing Castlevania characters into a Blazblue type-of-fighter)
Absolute best conceive third party Wii experience: No More Heroes
Missed opportunities: Star fox, more RPGs, Wii Motion Plus games, Wii+DS combo game (since Wii and DS rule in the hardware department).
Most original game this gen until now: I'll split it in what I consider all game shall aspire to be, it has to be a game withh lots of immersion like Bioshock, with deep and charismatic characters like Portal, an experience full of wonder like Mario Galaxies, and finally a game I'll like to play again like: Psychonauts, Super Mario RPG, or Killer 7.
