I have a lot of respect for voice actors, in and out of gaming. One thing that irk's me about people who play certain games is how they don't even wish to acknowledge these voice actors, and at any opportunity simply throw on the japanese voices if it's available, just because it's japanese.

I can get pretty obsessive about voice actors. Like, I wasn't looking forward to Max Payne 3 at all until they confirmed that James McCaffrey was coming back for the voice of Max.

And I'm pretty upset about Teddie and especially Chie's voice roles being replaced for the new Persona 4 games.

Though it is pretty interesting how many people here are against voice acting in any Nintendo game, especially Zelda.

I'm not, though. If Nintendo was hiring people of the caliber we're seeing in this video, it wouldn't be a problem at all.

Admittedly, I do prefer the JP voices usually. But that's mostly if those were the voices that were first available. But, that applies to any language. I prefer NMH in English, even though I adore everyone they got for the JP cast (it's seriously like, at least four or five of my favorite seiyuu).

However, I do think it's silly when people have no appreciation for other VAs (western or otherwise). Tara Strong will always be one of my favorite VAs, and I love Quinton Flynn a lot.

I don't think it's any Nintendo game, just certain cases. Mario and Zelda are fine the way they are to me, but I do appreciate and love having voice acting in games like Xenoblade, certain Metroid titles, etc.

But to me, this isn't limited to Nintendo. In Atlus titles, for instance, Persona needs voice acting, but I prefer SMT (main series) and Devil Summoner to not have voice acting. Just like I feel voice acting would fit in Trauma Center, but not Etrian Odyssey.

Annoys me slightly that they're going on about voice acting, they have David Kaye... and up until I got bored of seeing them go on about the past I had yet to see Scott McNeil. If you're going to make any type of piece on modern voice acting, you might want to at least have the most well known and successful voice actor alive on it. Not to mention, the putz who plays Sponge Bob shouldn't even be in this video, terrible actor.

i have to say, that while i do like a game with stellar voice work, it creates a disconnect from the player. it is much easier to feel like youre a part of the game when you dont have people's voices telling you how they feel or what they should do.. the moment people start talking the illusion is broken. you are now just advancing a plot.. like an interactive book. without voice, you tend to project your own emotions and thought into the character. you care more about this.. avatar, because it is essentially you. this may sound a bit like the ramblings of someone who wears a tinfoil hat and walks down the street talking to the "cap'n", but this is just my experience.

on a side note:

just started listening rob paulson's (pinky, yakko, raphael) voice acting podcast and have really gotten in to it. hearing how a lot of these actors got their start and what they do to make certain voices; really just finding out all of the voices some actors do.. its kind of amazing. supremely talented buch of people. he recently just had jennifer hale and nolan north on and these people are SO much more than commander shephard and drake, respectively.. im kind of hoping he would get charles martinet on but since he doesnt do much else but videogames, i dont think its going to happen.

I don't think "huge stars" really applies to Japanese voice actors, either. They're pretty much exactly the same as the American VAs that do anime and games, in the sense that they're kind of known among the fandom, but no one really knows of or gives a toss about them outside of that.
