Talk about the GoneSony site in here.

Some site suggestions

Postby Mini_Dragon » 01 Mar 2008 13:53

Hi.
I was really excited when Going Sony was announced. but there are some big flaws (IMO). Here is what i think:

-Images should be centered. Always. Having them hugging the left side really annoys me. And yes, I know, that sounds very odd. Maybe its just because I'm used to images being centered on GoNintendo, Joystiq, kotaku, etc. etc.

-IGN Updates, Gamespot Updates, and Gametrailers Updates - where are they? Shouldn't they come every day? And by come, I mean all of the updates... not just a select few.

-Updates in general seem kind of lacking. is it just because of the lack of PS3 news, lack of tips, etc?

I'm sure running a site is really really hard, but it surprises me that Going Sony does not seem to be getting as many updates as Gone Microsoft or Going Nintendo.

it's prolly because the people making the posts on goingsony.com, don't have as much time to update it as the people over on gonintendo and gonemircosoft. Just a guess but perhaps they dont have as much free time. But I rarely go on goingsony.com since i dont have a PS3 so dunno.... I say just stick around.. it could only get better

i took a look at the sites, and feel that since RMC is sort of the precedent for what the other two sites should be aiming for in terms of thoroughness and content, i agree that images (and flash movies) should be centred. RMC actually hard codes the alignment of images for you, and our new authors do not. so by default, i've added a simple instruction to the stylesheet that will automatically centre images on both goingsony and gonemicrosoft. authors will have to explicitly align things left or right if they wish to do so. thanks for the feedback on that.

as for the rest, and this is just being snarky.. they didn't seem so much like suggestions as observations, but the implied suggestion is that more content is desired. besides, how would anyone know they're missing out on any number of stories as part of IGN/gamespot/etc updates unless they're also visiting those sites too, in which case seeing those stories twice seems a bit of a moot point. again, i'm just being silly; i know what you mean.

but it should be said that the update schedules have been created so most of the day is covered by one person or another. since i don't have a lot of direct contact with the authors for our two new sites, if you notice stories that have been somehow missed, use each site's contact page/tip email to send it in, and maybe include a friendly note how you'd like to see more/all content included in the media sites' updates.

again, thanks for the note...we'll keep working to improve things the best we can!

Generally, I only look at IGN Wii. I'd only go to IGN PS3 every week or so. When i saw how.. few updates there were on the IGN Updates list, I went to see if that *Really* was all that was there. There was a lot more.

anyways, thanks for the reply.

I don't think that people who send into the tips@goingsony.com email address are getting credit. Either no one's looking at it, or no one's being credited. Either way, someone's at fault there.

Also, the little things need to be reported. High profile PS3 game reviews, impressions need to be highlighted on the site, and they currently are not.

I donno. Its been a month, and no real improvements. It seems that by the time I read news on Going Sony, I've read it 5 times already, while when I read something on GoNintendo, it is new to me.

yes, sadly, the staff we had lined up for the site seem to have other interests or priorities and have all but abandoned their posts without notice, really, which is why there haven't been any posts in the past 2.5 weeks, and wasn't much more frequent before that.

i would hate to see the sony site go under because of lack support.. we DO need staff as passionate and dedicated as RMC for the sony site, and if not all in one person, divided among a few people. it turns out people love an overwhelming deluge of information, and the only way to accomplish this is by posting new content and stories for 18-20 hours a day.

pardon us as we try to see through the egg yolk and figure out what to do next. i personally love the ps3 brand too much to let it wilt on the vine. as i posted in the comments of the most recent story, your support, ideas, suggestions, or referrals could definitely make the difference here.. thanks for sticking by us!

See, I'm actually of the opinion that Rawmeat posts way too much. I still read the site mind you, but it's very exhaustive and takes a huge time commitment to get through. I've always understood that that is what the fan base wants, though. Some people want every single remotely Nintendo related piece of news reported on, some don't.

I still find it absolutely insane how much content Rawmeat covers, most of the other venues have fairly large teams doing the coverage of far less content. When you step into Gonintendo, you know immediately that this is a site for the true Nintendo enthusiast. If you want to see screen shots from magazines that are only in Japan, that's where you go, if you want to know what happened in terms of Nintendo on every site on the internet, that's where you go. The site caters in every way to Nintendo's culture and hardcore fanbase.

That's a real challenge to do that sort of thing all over again but make it not just about the Gonintendo fanbase, but the Sony fanbase as well.

You know what though, I know a guy that has a background in Web Design and Photography that is a big Sony fan. He's a very OCD perfectionist as well. I'm going to show him the site when I see him on AIM next.

He doesn't have a PS3 yet, though. I think he's saving up for the MGS4 bundle. He's my high school ex-girlfriend's brother, her and I broke up but he and I stayed in touch. We also work very well together. I'll see if he's interested.

I think the reason RMC posts so much stuff is for financial purposes, but that might just be me. If RMC posted like...10 less stories a day, or took longer breaks between each story, people could get more information that way. He posts like...70 stories a day or something.

i think he posts more than that :-P i'm not sure it's financial for him.. i think he just likes to be thorough. but since this is a sony thread, i'll try to tie it back by the end... he does post so much that people have been complaining it's TOO much. in effort to balance some of that, we're going to add a "top stories" sidebar module that will filter out the gamedaily lists and other non-news and give people the biggest stories at a glance. you can get a feel for the prototype on the sony homepage (currently populated with PS3 stories).

I think it would be a good idea to add more sections to the GoingSony forums. Take a look at the official PS Forums and you'll see what I mean. This is a Sony site and yet no "Playstation General". "PS3 General" is "ok" but I want something more that covers the Playstaion brand as a whole, not just the PS3. If we named a section "Playstation General" then that would open things up to include anything released regarding the Playstation brand or SCEA, SCEJ and SCEE. Know what I mean?

I'm also someone who would choose more content rather than less, even if it borders on being an overload of information. If I were an uber Sony fanboy (I'm not, I'm an uber Nintendo fanboy) I would prefer to read a blog that posted tons of stories, similar to what RMC does on GoNintendo.

If I want to read a site that's very infrequently updated except for a few previews and such, I can get that at IGN or any other mainstream site. Sites like this one are for the hardcore fanboy who wants to absorb every single amount of info out there, regardless of how small or insignificant it might seem. Everyone else is probably content with the schlock at IGN and Gamespot. I like those sites, mind you, but they're hardly "fresh" except for exclusive scoops now and then.
