Bowser Bridge Battles getting old?

Postby KingMario128 » 24 May 2012 12:04

Hi :mario: :

Lately in recent Mario titles begins with NSMB Bowser have return to the classic BRIDGES battles from original SMB, they give us nostalgia in NSMB, in NSMBWii they made it alot more epic, and in Super Mario 3D Land they give us a 3D version of the battle.

But after 3 titles with the same battle made me a little sick about them, although in NSMB the battle was for give us nostalgia, in NSMBWii the main attraction was the second phase and in Mario 3D Land the final boss one was AWESOME, i think they need to do something diferent for the incoming sequel NSMB2, but i need to remember you that the bridge battles are more recurrent in the NEW titles so far (3DLand is more inspired in "new" that "galaxy" games in my opinion).

Maybe a rendition of BRICK BRIDGE BATTLE of SMB3? or a tribute to KOOPA KLOWN CAR BATTLE? or something TOTALLY NEW? What did you think?

P.S:Im new here
P.S2: Sorry if i have bad english

Barring NSMB (which sucks anyway), NSMBWii and 3D Land built upon the standard scenario. As you said, NSMBWii added a second sequence involving some crazy platforming, and while not necessarily 'new', 3D Land presented the scenario in three dimensions. Concerning NSMB2, if they follow in the footsteps of NSMBWii, than expect something special.

BRICK BRIDGE BATTLE of SMB3

This was done in Galaxy. It wasn't a brick bridge, but the concept was the same: Stand on bricks/glass, Bowser jumps, move to the side, Bowser lands on bricks/glass, Bowser smashes the bridge and falls/shatters glass and gets burned.

KOOPA KLOWN CAR BATTLE

NSMBWii, World 8 - Airship.

I have to agree. Bridge battles were not all that great to begin with. They are just too easy and are a bit boring because it is all about timing and dodging. If Bowser learned to not jump he could never be defeated. :P

Having said that, I'm sure they will still do something similar in NSMB: 2. Either that or they will bring back another classic boss battle like you already suggested. Maybe Wart will make a comeback?

Also, welcome to the site! ^_^

And 3D Bowser battles are not? But I agree, precise movement is boring and definitely not what platformers are all about. :/

Yes, and that would make for an unfair (ergo, terrible) boss fight.

I never said they weren't, but these "bridge battles" are even easier. I'm sure other people will think differently though. Everyone is better at different things.

Well, in 2D you move left and right and the only thing you have to time is when to run under him when he jumps, as well as a bit of dodging. In 3D you can move in any direction you want and the battles are usually longer and more involved.

Yes, and that would make for an unfair (ergo, terrible) boss fight.
I never said they should actually make him realize that. It is called a joke. :P

Anyways, back and forth posting between two people isn't look highly upon...

I'm ok with a bridge battle as long as the button at the end of the bridge is no longer available

Seriously? who design that Bowser himself?

Something totally new would be great

i always assumed bowser built that so he could retract the bridge and keep people out of his private room. which made me wonder why he didn't just press the button himself when mario was crossing the dang thing.

I'm hoping Bowser Bridge Battles in the future are replaced with Koopa Klown Car Battles. (*Oh how I miss them……*)

I think a remake of SMB3 Bowser Battle would be good for begins something diferent, but i really want something a little more complex like bowser battles in yoshi island SNES and YIDS for a 2D Mario Game, or at least a battle we can damage bowser stomping his head or belly or tail or nose or whatever like in galaxy 1 battle instead only avoid bowser until his demise.

I think that the bridge sequences place the emphasis on pure platforming as opposed to the traditional stomp-three-times boss battle.

Especially in 3D Land, where the goal of the meta-game is to fling yourself through the levels as fast as possible (hence why your best times are transferred via Streetpass). With the right jumps, you can get under or around Bowser and to the button before he can really get close enough to slow you down.

That's not to say that the different styles of bosses aren't interesting, but I guess it depends on what the game was designed for.

I don't mind the bridge battles, it was nice to see them back after so long. I think it may be time for something new again though. With all the SMB3 influence in NSMB2 I'm half expecting a battle like the last one from SMB3 where you have to get Bowser to pound through the ground and fall to his death.

I guess you were pretty disappointed when you saw the final boss battles in New Super Mario Bros 2 then, since it doesn't take much/any inspiration from Super Mario Bros 3 and uses a cliched gameplay mechanic.

I haven't seen the last battle. I wouldn't be disappointed at all if it had nothing to do with Mario 3, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if it was. I don't think I implied that I would be disappointed if it was, but if I did that wasn't the intent. I don't really want to know what it's like until I play it though honestly. I did see that Reznors were back unless that was on the WiiU one, but haven't seen any actual boss battles.

Bearing in mind that most people here probably don't want the end spoiled, what was the cliched gameplay mechanic? I watched a video of it and thought it offered a nice change from what we've seen in the past. Are there many other games that use that kind of battle and I'm not just aware of them?

How it's basically just dodge Bowser until you hit a switch, like in New Super Mario Bros Wii? That's become a bit of a cliche now, the general style is in New Super Mario Bros Wii, 2 and Super Mario 3D Land. Basically, a bridge battle mixed with a chase scene.
