What's up with the PS2?

Postby PikminFan7 » 11 Aug 2008 16:18

The PS2 is a last-generation console, but Sony still makes games for it and people still buy it. So is it last-generation console or is it a third generation console?

what? none of that post makes much sense. i'm not sure what 'third generation' is supposed to mean, but no, it's not that.

the ps2 was planned to be a product with a 10-year life cycle. it's not been 10 years yet, and in case anyone missed it, is insanely well installed into homes around the world. it stands to reason that a market that large would still have plenty of life to it.

the ps2 is a 6th generation console (the current consoles being the 7th generation)

looking at it from today, the ps2 of course is a last-gen-console.

why is it seeling so well?
its cheap and it has a lot of good games.

Bingo. It's small, it's quiet, it has a massive library of games and it's cheap. What's not to love?

Just over this summer, both my friend and I got the Metal Gear Solid Essential collection.

They still make the PS2 (and games thereof) because the PS2 is still profitable. The PS2 is still profitable due to people like me, who may have missed out before.

Great purchase. If I didn't already own all the MGS games, I would have picked up that collection too. I too am also still buying PS2 games, both new ones and games that I missed out on before.

On a side note, I suspect that the reason Sony has removed PS2 backwards compatibility from damn near all of the PS3 models is because the PS2 is still profitable. Sony doesn't want people to be able to play PS2 games on the PS3, they want you to go buy a PS2.

Oh wow, I didn't know that. That makes sense. Do some/any PS3 models still retain backwards compatibility?

The only current model, that I know of, is the 80gb MGS4 bundle. Previously, the 20gb and 60gb PS3s had hardware backwards compatibility (BC) - this has been stripped out in favor of software BC (which used to be worse than hardware BC, but nowadays most PS2 games run flawlessly).

Sony's SKUs are a mess...here's a link on Wikipedia that shows the various packages and which ones have which features:

One cool thing is that all PS3s can play PS1 games. It's just the PS2 games that you have to worry about.

I'm predicting the Playstation 2 demise Q1 2011.
