There has been no shortage of rumors for the Wii U, much like there were for the Wii before it got a 'true' reveal at E3. GamesRadar has decided to round-up all the major Wii U rumors out there for some poking and prodding, pre-E3.

Wii U rumor roundup

Postby AnoukiAgentYellow » 01 May 2012 15:28

My thoughts:

Nintendo will probably keep the Wii U name.
$300 will probably happen
It will NOT launch in November
It will compete with current tech, obviously
It will support multiple tablets, they just won't be required.
Don't think the Wii U tablet will be an iPad, just a large DS touchscreen.
Yep there will be scanning toys a la Skylanders
MMOs will not come to the system because "Nintendo is teh kiddie"
Gamecube VC games is a must!
Will not have a strong line-up, probably a Mario game and a sports mini-game compilation (& Steel Diver 2 :P )
The 3DS is already planning on having retail games for download, so it's a given that the Wii U will do so as well.

Wii U rumor roundup

"In terms of sheer power, Nintendo hasn't been competition for another console since it's 16 bit days. I can't see that changing here. Maybe, just MAYBE, the Wii-U will compete with the current gen, but only since they've had time to come up to the level of the PS3 and Xbox. However, once the other new gen systems come out, Nintendo is likely to fall behind once again."

First comment

This guy has no idea what's he talking about, the N64 was more powerful then the PS1 and the Gamecube was more powerful then the PS2, this guy needs to research more.

AGREED. I read that and thought, "This person is undoubtedly an idiot."

Conversely, I disagree with some of the predictions from AnoukiAgentYellow. My instincts from what we've seen in the build up to E3 are telling me that it WILL launch in November, it WILL have MMO's (at least at first), and it will have a much stronger lineup than Yellow indicated. Nintendo may still have lots of assets, but Iwata wants to get back to making his entire salary again as quickly as possible. They have learned some lessons from the 3DS launch, and will be putting forth as much effort as possible to make sure they don't have this situation again.

Why would it NOT launch in November? Are you saying earlier? Surely you don't think it will be pushed until 2013?

I'm calling November 18th like so many others, maybe an October release date to please EA and Ubisoft with AC3 and Medal of Honor
Currently Playing- Wii: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, 3DS: Super Mario 3D Land, X360: Deus Ex HR

Just random speculation, before or after, I'm just guessing not November.

I agree with most of your thoughts, AnoukiAgentYellow. However, I do think the lineup will be better than the DS, 3DS, and Wii's. Of course, most of the games will be made up of current-gen ports from third-parties. There's currently around 13-15 announced projects in the works, with most of them intended for release within the console's launch window. With that said, we have hardly heard a peep out of Japanese third-parties such as Capcom, Square Enix, and Sega despite being under NDA as well. Naturally, Nintendo has stronger relationships with them compared to western third-parties. Although, most of confirmed western third-party games are simply current-gen ports anyway, so it's not like western publishers are taking a big risk with much exclusives.

As far as the release date goes, I think Wii U will launch in November (like the DS, GameCube and Wii before it), but possibly October at the earliest. Nintendo's got a strong lineup of 3DS software coming out in the second half of the year. In addition, Nintendo will be making a profit off of the 3DS again starting in August according to Iwata. I don't think Nintendo will feel compelled to rush Wii U out of the gate.

I think the most amount of Wii U controllers the console will allow for will end up being two. From a developer perspective, limiting it to just one Wii U controller make sense from a technical perspective despite the creative ideas one would do with up to 4 controllers. It would seem that the amount of power and bandwidth needed to render a game twice in real-time (once on the screen and once on the controller when it is put to use) is significant but varies depending on how exactly it is used. Iwata said it would be possible to use more than one controller, but perhaps anything more than two controllers would be too taxing for the console. So in that sense, Wii U could be more powerful than the Xbox 360, but that doesn't necessarily translate to x2 the better graphics.

We have to remember that the Wii U's touchscreen can do more than just serve as a touchscreen like the Ds/3DS. With motion controls, it can be used as a "second window" when combined with the TV like what we've seen from Nintendo's various E3 tech demos.

Please let's not joke about that. Steel Diver is no laughing matter! Feel bad for all the people who gave their lives and bought that game. :(
Finally got a PS3 sooo add me if you want. :)

I think November is very possible. But I'm guessing before though.
I'm guessing it will compete with current and 'next gen' tech.
I'm thinking it will support at least 2 tablets
MMOs will probably show up in some way on the Wii U. In fact DQ X was already confirmed for it.
I'm also guessing it will have a strong line up.

My thoughts based on your layout:

Nintendo will change the name to Wii 2.
It will be $300-$350
It will launch in November
It will be stronger than current-gen, but it'll be the PS2 of the next generation (which is fine)
It will support 2 tablets.
The controller will function like an iPad, but like a DS during gameplay.
NFC will obviously be included.
I'm not sure about MMOs.
Nintendo will allow downloadable GCN and Wii games on the eShop.

Wii U rumor roundup

Postby The_Dude1212 » 01 May 2012 17:46

Anyone still down for the Perfect Nintendo Entertainment System? PNES for short? Anyone...?

...old joke, whatever.

I still pin the date to Sunday October 21st or Friday October 26th.

The only thing I would truly hope for is that Nintendo would unlock the ability to play Blu-Rays on the system for an extra small fee, so those who do plan to use it as a full multimedia system can, and those who have no need to can save the extra dough for a VC game, cause I bet those GameCube VC games are gonna run $15-20.
