Looks like Europe is getting the same treatment as Japan. It's unclear on if the cradle will be included in the North American version.

I'm so confused as to how this even makes sense. How the hell do you NOT include a charger for something that'll last 6.5 hours and has no other way of powering on?

Really, an incredibly bizarre decision. Nothing about it makes sense.

For those that do not know yet, Nintendo contacted Destructoid to inform them that North America WILL be getting an AC adapter included with the 3DS XL.

Europe - 3DS XL power plug, cradle sold separately

Postby Elfteiroh » 22 Jun 2012 02:50

The cradle probably won't be included in the US. (yes I know the AC adapter will be)
Also, this is probably targeted at thos that have a DSi XL or a 3DS, to replace the first, or to act as a "companion" to the second.
Those will already have AC adapters handy, so no problem. (broke my 3DS one, and currently using my DSi one, so it does happen ;) )

Also: It's NOT a redesign. :O

Although I'm happy to know that NA will have an AC adapter included, it still makes no sense for it to not be included with the system in other regions. Nintendo has made some strange decisions in the past, but this is without a doubt their most nonsensical.

Obviously if this is the case for Japan as well as Europe there is some sort of extra cost for manufacturing these that is not in effect for the US. I wonder what that is.

I think NoA is just eating the extra cost themselves because they (or their potentially angry consumers, rather) realize how silly this is.

Europe - 3DS XL power plug, cradle sold separately

It's a shrewd means to charge more for the system in an underhanded way that lets them put a desirable price on the system while still getting the amount they'd prefer via the overpriced, required charger. Unless it has a standard usb connector now. It's just like sony did with proprietary vita memory cards. but they know U.S. consumers are very sensitive to price and vocal about stuff that seems like a scam. and the adaptors for all regions probably all come from the same manufacturers in china. They probably cost less than $1 per unit.

I think this it a step in the right direction. 3DS uses exactly the same charger as the DS, DSi and the 3DS. Many, many of the potential buyers allready own that thing.

For example, I just bought an LCD screen, I got about 25 meters of useless wires with it, I can just burn them right now, that is very bad for our planet. Companies need to take responsebility for this kind of waste.

But this way we can just keep using it when we allready got that thing, it will still be an usefull item. People who really need the charger can just buy one seperately. I just hope the spare part will be cheap enough, and the price of the XL can be that little lower.

When it is packed in, about 200 million (roughly estimated) perfectly good working chargers will be rendered useless when people update their systems. So I can certainly welcome this new approach as long as this part will not be overpriced.

@Lionk

But is the 3DS charger the same charger as DSi/3DS?

Nintendo has a habit of switching up chargers randomly.

@The_King_Up_North

It is the price they pay for getting Pandora's Tower and Fatal Frame 2.

Two games, but no charger.

We get a charger, but no games.

@Lionk
Why should someone, who already bought a 3DS, buy another 3DS? What do I have, if I own 2 of these sytems?
And what is, if there is someone who wants to buy his/her first 3DS and chooses the XL-Version?

I imagine there is some internal pressure still about 3DS pricing. I think that early price drop is still stinging a bit.

You sell this new system for $199 + charger + cradle and they're getting the real price of the system back up there, while still advertising a sub $200 price. I'm sure they won't sell at a 1:1 ratio, but you can guarantee the profit margin on chargers and docking cradles is significantly higher than the system itself.

First of all, anyone in the Americas who is complaining can stop because NoA that people love to hate is including a charger with the system.

My guess is that Europe (at least) has tougher environmental disposal rules. Thus, if they don't need to make new chargers, they won't, because they have to cover disposal of them somehow. (The US still allows batteries in garbage, Europe does not).

Just thinking outside the box here.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite follow. The 3DS XL in Europe and Japan does not come packaged with any means of charging the battery unless you buy an adapter that is sold seperately?

I have a friend that works at GAME (in Sweden that is). I can just imagine his cries when hundreds of enraged buyers realize that they have to buy the AC adapter separately. This is really, really stupid to be honest.

Cat that love to eat plastic...
Kids find scissor, then find some wire to cut...
You always carry the AC adapter with you, all rolled up, until you find out the wire inside was cut by all the manipulations you did...
A car ran over it and the casing and metal prongs are dead...
You accidentally drop it in a fire/put it on a hot stove...
You simply LOSE it...
etc.
