Mario RPG 2?

Postby Star-Kun » 04 Jul 2012 17:14

I got a message on my deviantart where someone was saying there's things going on involving a sequel to Super Mario RPG:

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Sequel Confirmed for Wii U

"In an unprecedented partnership not seen since the 90s, Square Enix and Nintendo combined forces to announce Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars 2. This is just a working title for the game, but will feature several old and new characters, including the long-awaited Geno and Mallow. "We wanted to do something cool," one of the designers said in an interview. "What better way to do that than with the dual screen capabilities of the WiiU? There are some pretty cool interactions you can do with timed hits that simply haven't been possible before."

The person said they saw it in a tumblr, but even though it sounds like a really good idea, I highly doubt it will happen.

Maybe there's any confirmation to this? what are your thoughts on the whole subject, even if it is fake?
Gamers are people who actually respect the games for what's going on, the gameplay, music, etc.

I don't count people who just play stuff like modern warfare 3 just to look cool.

not sure if I want sqaure of today to make it. sometimes, it is best to let the past be just that.

however, if I could transport the team from 1996 to today, give them today's tech, I'd buy this game ten times.

Did you ask for its source?

Anyway, after recent collaborations in party games like Fortune Street and the Basketball games, I can see this happening.

Sincerely, I don't really mind it, I wasn't too fond of it to either happen or not.

I never said I trusted tumblr. I figured it was fake when they said they got if off of tumblr

Obviously you said you didn't trust tumblr, but to make a new thread about it says otherwise (At least the way I see it).

I was making it apparent that there's a rumor of a game's sequel, whether I was aware it could be fake or not

Obviously just some guy's pipe-dream. I wish some people would just let this subject die already, much like the topic of a Mario Galaxy 3. Mario RPGs still exist today in at least two forms, and both are excellent in their own rights to the point I'd even go as far as to say I like them more than Mario RPG. And Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were great, but how about a new 3D Mario game huh? Why do you people want a Galaxy 3, and yet complain when more "New Super Mario Bros." games come out and you call them "rehashes of old ideas"?

I hate saying the word, but: THIS. And if you look back at the designer's (should be developer's) interview, it sounds way to cheesy to be real.

This alone makes it completely fake. Of course it refers to Super Mario RPG 2, but the way it's phrased makes it seem as if Nintendo and Square Enix haven't worked together before.
Spoiler:
Which we know is false:
*Mario Hoops 3-on-3
*Itadaki Street DS
*Nintendo publishing Dragon Quest outside Japan
*Mario Sports Mix
*Fortune Street/Itadaki Street Wii

I've read so many fake Super Mario RPG 2 stories that's it not even funny. I know it probably won't ever come out, but I like to keep some hope alive for it. Anyway, this one seems very fake.

See, I also saw this floating around Tumblr earlier, but it had the following Kotaku link as a source.

http://kotaku.com/5909140/mario-rpg-2-l ... g-to-wii-u

However, you'll find that that link redirects to a story about Sony losing buckets of money, so i'ma call shenanigans on this.

But doesn't the fact that the link exists and redirects to something else instead of just resulting in an error mean something?

Paper Mario (NINTENDO 64) is a sequel to Super Mario RPG. Heck, it even said so in the developement cycle

It was initially going to be Super Mario RPG 2, but that changed. Nintendo realized that Paper Mario was too different from Super Mario RPG to consider it a sequel to it.

With that said, I think this is entirely bogus. Doesn't hurt to dream though.

Nope, it was actually the fact that Super Mario RPG is owned by both, Nintendo and Square (Enix), and Nintendo wasn't allowed to call it Super Mario RPG 2 without Square (Enix) being involved, or something alomg those lines.

So where did you read that Nintendo isn't allowed to call Paper Mario Super Mario RPG 2 without Square Enix being a part of it? That literally makes no sense. By that logic, Nintendo shouldn't be allowed to use the Donkey Kong Country name.

Edit: Now mind you, I don't have anything supporting what I said either, but at least I have something coherent backing it up. The two games only share similarities in genre. All gameplay elements implemented were entirely different. Would make no sense keep the name of it as Super Mario RPG 2, and I've found nothing that supports your claims that suggest them not being allowed to use the name.

@Broken_cartridge you're right. NINTENDO owns Mario and Donkey Kong not Square Enix or RARE.

The original is owned by both companies, I don't how much each company owns of the game (outside of your typical Geno, Mallow and Culex), since it's Final Fantasy with a coat of Mario paint. Nintendo and Square Enix must work together if we want a "true" Super Mario RPG 2, if Nintendo released Paper Mario as Super Mario RPG 2, you could have expected Square to step in and demand a name change/game recall/whatever they had to do to prevent the game to released with that name without their approve.
I wish I could provide you with the link where I read that, but I can't find it, it's been a while since I read it.
About DKC, the series was owned by both Nintendo and Rareware, but with the whole Rareware purchase by Microsoft, Nintendo got 100% of the rights of DKC.

The only thing I can find about the game is that Square owns the rights to the new characters they introduced for the game. Not even wikipedia lists what you mentioned (which is notorious for listing wild claims such as that....not saying that would prove it true, though). The game was produced by Miyamoto and published by Nintendo. I highly doubt that Square owns the rights to the name "Super Mario RPG". Paper Mario is only a spiritual successor to Super Mario RPG, and the reason why it wasn't named "Super Mario RPG 2" that makes the most sense is because the two games are entirely different and it can not be considered a sequel because of this.

Outside of that, it doesn't really matter if Square owns the rights or not. Like I said, the games are entirely different, hence the different names, but the fact that at one point Paper Mario was named Super Mario RPG 2 pretty much proves that Square doesn't own the rights. Otherwise that would have never been in the cards. Without proof, I will not believe a claim that doesn't add up with what we already know.

Now I have two questions. If Paper Mario (NINTENDO 64) was gonna be called Super Mario RPG 2, what was it's original plot? Also, will the other games in the Paper Mario Series be called, hypothetically, Super Mario RPG 3: The Thousand-year door, Super Mario RPG 4, and Super Mario RPG 5: Sticker Star?

The only game in the Paper Mario series that was at one point going to be called Super Mario RPG was the first one, and it was when the game was earlier in development. To my knowledge they showed the game under the Mario RPG name first, but later decided to change the name. Because of that, I don't think that the plot was going to be any different.

Actually the original plot for Paper Mario was going to be very similar to Yoshi's Story, wherein Bowser traps Mario in a story book. It was to explain the radical visual change from the previous Mario Adventure, Mario 64
