I was so sad when Bomberman for 3DS was cancelled, it looked promising!

GT Countdown - Top 10 Fallen Angels

Postby SpecterM91 » 03 Aug 2012 00:04

I actually don't think I can agree with a single entry. That's never happened before. I mean, damn, they acted like getting HD remakes of the first two Hawk games was a BAD thing after saying the early ones were great. And seriously, if I hear one more SH "fan" cry about the new games having awkward controls, I'm kicking their teeth. SH1-4 had some of the most clunky, pointlessly odd controls possible. Gamers, man...

I would have expected to see Guitar Hero in this list. Other than that though, I agree with most of the entries. Especially with number 1.

I dunno, all of the entries EXCEPT for Sonic were justified, I felt. Sonic Unleashed was a (very small) step in the right direction, Sonic Colors was more of a slight leap, and they picked up momentum from there with Sonic 4: Episode 2 (which is an excellent game), and Sonic Generations (which is an amazing game). If anything, I feel like Sonic is finally, FINALLY, digging himself out of the rut he'd dug for himself starting with Sonic '06.

Cant say i disagree with any of their choices to be honest, sure a few can be argued for, but most are definitely not what they once were.

James Bond? Guitar Hero?

Also, Sonic doesn't deserve that number one spot. Actually, you could make an argument that he shouldn't even be on there at all. Like others have said, Colors and Generations seem to have done pretty well. Also, the GBA and DS games were always good.

I think Sonic should be on the list but not number 1. Generations was perhaps my favorite game of last year and Sonic Colors and Sonic 4: Episode 2 are both good games. Sonic definitely fell from grace but he's working on it. Ratchet and Clank really shouldn't be on there either. All 4 One isn't great but it's not bad either. I think move Sonic back a few places, get rid of Ratchet and Clank and then add either Madden, Guitar Hero or Call of Duty.

I agree that Colors is overrated, but it's a decent game. It's nowhere near the quality of a platformer like Mario Galaxy 2, but it was a breath of fresh air for a Sonic game, after about a decade of horrible games. Generations was damn good though. I hope they continue in that direction, and stay away from the Sonic 4 direction.

This list was awful, especially since it's inconsistent, as soon as you go "it's by no means a bad game" you've lost your reason to put it on the list? Seriously, Splinter Cell was on this list because it was not stealth heavy, yet every other franchise that has changed their style was left alone? In fact, by that logic, why wasn't Metal Gear there?

And once again we've proven that people ignore every time a Sonic game gets a good score. GT themselves have given plenty of above-average scores to 3D Era Sonic games. They also claimed Final Fantasy XIII was a game "no Final Fantasy fan should be disappointed about" and now it "fell short of expectations"?

I realise it's not just one person reviewing the games and making the list, but at least take a look at what your own website said about some games before going 180 on it all, maybe bring it up by saying "While we liked it, it was clear others didn't." or whatever.

...Also, you can't call something a "fallen angel" after ONE bad game GT, no series is perfect, ever. If I was like that I'd go whine about how the Zelda franchise is ruined now because I didn't like Skyward Sword. Gah!

...Rant over.

GT Countdown - Top 10 Fallen Angels

Postby Broken_Cartridge » 03 Aug 2012 08:33

Sonic deserves the number one spot. It's the franchise that has fallen the furthest from it's original glory. While some may say "COLRS IZ AWESOME" the game wasn't. If you enjoy it, that's fine, good on you, but the game design was poor. There were moments when it felt like the game was playing itself. Generations is the closest thing to having a good Sonic game in years, but even that game falls short.

As for people complaining about the other spots, I don't agree with you if your complaints are saying that the franchises listed haven't "fallen", but I do agree that there could possibly be better choices for things on this list if that was your complaint.

To be perfectly honest, I've never really liked Sonic, neither the character nor his games, even back in the 16-bit days.
Which is a good thing, as I wasn't as heartbroken as many others by his demise. ^^

A "decade"? Where the hell have you been, in a cave?

The worst Sonic games have ONLY come from 2006, not "10 years".

And no, Colors is not overrated, it's as great as people say it is, and comparing it to SMG2 (an almost entirely different game) isn't proving crap.

I can't say there isn't much on the list I disagree with. Perhaps Ratchet & Clank, but the PSP games were pretty bad. Their sales haven't been great, but the games were okay. But I'm going to have to say that Castlevania should be on the list instead of it. Castlevania really doesn't know what it's been doing the past decade. Even with Lords of Shadow, something people praised as its' rebirth, is still very timid among most fans and casual players alike for various reasons.

For Sonic, yeah, he does deserve to be on the top of the list. But...after Colors and Generations, I saw hope. No DLC for Generations made me sad, especially since it's the best Sonic since Sonic 3. Sonic 4 has been a complete and utter bust though, and they should just end it. I feel like, however, that the next Sonic game will make or break the franchise, as well as Sega.

Silent Hill's dead though. It's done. No more.

GT Countdown - Top 10 Fallen Angels

@Sir Tobbii but I loved SS :(
Also, I don't think you guys get what the list is supposed to be. I think it's supposed to be about games that used to be big but have fallen from glory. Sonic used to be almost as big as Mario, now the only way they compete is on Olympic. Sonic isn't as relevant as he used to be. Sonic generations being on pretty much every platform didn't do that well. I believe it sold around the same numbers as sonic colors

Sonic should not be number one. In fact, he shouldn't really be on the list at all. Sonic had a rough stretch of games but with releases like Sonic Generations he could very well be on his way back up.

Also, screw them, Silent Hill Downpour was great. Easily the best traditional Silent Hill since SH3.

Though I guess if you view it from a "these franchises aren't as big as they used to be" standpoint it makes more sense.

GT Countdown - Top 10 Fallen Angels

Postby MoldyClay » 03 Aug 2012 13:52

I really haven't played most of these series.

Bomberman didn't fall because of Act Zero. It just became less relevant, and now the company is dead.

And really, the games are very samey.

Anyone who honestly thinks Silent Hill became bad is crazy. Yes, it stopped being as relevant and popular, but the quality hasn't dropped in the main series. 0rigins, Homecoming, Shattered Memories and Downpour were all good games.

The problem with some of these, and specifically Sonic, is that the reason some have fallen is because people play one or two games they may not like and they immediately condemn the series and won't buy anymore assuming they're all bad now.

Honestly, of all the Sonic titles, the only ones I did NOT like were Shadow, the DS games and I haven't played, but I have no interest in the Secret Rings game. He's released a lot of mediocre titles, but nothing truly bad. And the only reason Sonic 2006 is so bad is because the story/loading/bugs. The actual game isn't that bad, from what I played.

Granted, this list is about franchises that used to be huge and are now either dead or just not selling what they used to. Kind of like the film "The Artist" with the actor being a huge star until voiced films came along. It's like that.

@Broken_Cartridge

The reason Colors is great is because it was a step closer to the right direction. SEGA was starting to figure out a happy medium for what people wanted. Generations *was* great. It starts falling apart when you get to Modern Sonic's stages in his own eras simply because of his physics, but I honestly loved that game. Except the final boss and how short it was.

@sonic7877

Galaxy 2 and Sonic Colors are completely different types of games. I don't even know how you can compare them.

Also, from what I understand, Sonic 4 E.2 wasn't as bad a direction as Sonic 4 E.1.

Act Zero was just a bad game. To be fair, the late games were just party ones and many multiplayer titles of the classic series. Don't judge me wrong, I liked the multiplayer games like Bomberman Blast but I wish there could have been more adventure-style ones like Bomberman 64 or Hero.
