Xbox SmartGlass: did Microsoft just render the Wii U controller obsolete?

Am I the only one that thinks these claims are absolutely ridiculous? I watched Microsoft's press conference. I like the idea of SmartGlass...but I never thought it would 'kill' the Wii U.

The Wii U and its GamePad are meant to be together. They are forever linked as the main focus of the platform. SmartGlass is an added bonus that developers will have to support. Hasn't anyone thought that perhaps Wii U devs will go with Wii U first and then port some of those ideas to SmartGlass instead of just making for SmartGlass and ignoring Wii U?

What about the fact that third parties have no idea what kinds of phones or tablets their consumers have when making a game...but if they make a game for Wii U, they know for sure that the GamePad is there.
