GN Version 4.0
- Tamiya was in charge of direction for Wii U Chat
- Watanabe was in charge of the library
- Takeda wanted to have this type of capability for years
- this idea was tossed around back during the N64 days
- when the idea of adding a camera to the Wii U came about, video chat discussion resurfaced
- Nintendo worked with Vidyo to make this happen
- the decision was made last year
- Vidyo provides video conferencing systems for business use
- the team was worried about video interruption and block noise due to all different types of connection speeds
- Vidyo's tech lets Nintendo montiroa connection in real-time and adjusts the signal
- once a connection has started, the rest of the session can go without contacting the server
- using a P2P connect makes for less likelihood of a problem
- if this method wasn't used, Nintendo would have to add in fees for the user, and they didn't want this
- Next Level Games was also involved in the creation of Wii U Chat
- Nintendo Zone was created alongside the Project Engineering Department
- The overseas teams would meet in person every 3 months to align themselves on a project
- this helped get across emotions that didn't really come across in email
- With Nintendo Zone, the overseas version was made first while the Japanese one was localized later
- this is the first time Vidyo's tech has been implemented into a game system
- Silicon Studio helped to optimize the moving parts
- the team wanted the interface to be simple and easy to understand
- made it so both screens show the same image
- the team calls their solution a two-step connection
- all you do is pick a friend you want to talk to then push the call button
- Miis are listed in order of video chat frequency
- Takeda wanted the Wii U to be a console that brings family happiness
- home button flashes when you have a call
- if people playing a game get a call, they can open the menu and see that someone is calling them
- this ends the game you were playing
- you can leave a message for those that are offline
- draw on the screen during Wii U Chat
- at first they made this a whiteboard feature that you would press a button to switch modes for
- they also had the idea of more colors and pens, but they felt this distracted from the call too much
- when you draw, the line glows a bit
