Wii U Virtual Console games not compatible with older Wii VC saves

There are two ways to play Virtual Console games on the Wii U. This goes for Wii Virtual Console games that are re-released on Wii U.

1) Transfer your Wii's data to your Wii U, then go into the Wii Menu and play them as normal, save data and all.

2) Transfer your Wii's data to your Wii U, then pay a nominal fee ($1 for NES games, $1.50 for SNES games) to re-buy those games on the Wii U's VC so you can play them on the GamePad and access them directly on the Wii U's normal menu.

There's a major difference with the second option. Doing this means you can't use any Wii Virtual Console saves you have for the game in question. For example, if you have a Super Metroid save that you've transferred to your Wii U, but you purchase the Wii U upgrade to play Super Metroid on your GamePad, your old save file isn't going to work.
