Best Kids Game? Seriously? C'mon!!! Sheesh! The gaming world needs to grow up.

I do hate the distinction between "Kids game" and "Adult Game". I find it is naturally immature to treat each differently rather than just games. Only the west seems to have this distinction where they must seek the approval of something being adult for them to like it. You see this in everything and it is getting old. Movies with "Dark" movies being automatically better somehow and games with the same reasoning.

For example, in America it is shame on you if you continue watching cartoons that are not adult in theme (like south park or family guy) as cartoons are only for kids. In Japan, while there are some who are like minded, are less concerned as Anime and Manga are for everyone and not limited to a certain age group. Sure, they may be targeted towards one but there is nothing wrong with continuing to read things like Shounen Jump Magazine into your late 20s or even as you are in your 30s-40s.

But at least it won awards I guess. Don't get me started on what I think about people and their "Specs" war.

I don't think there's a problem with this winning best kids game. It's not saying it's a game for kids, but a game that is great for kids. That's all it is, it's also great for me and you.

What they're really saying is it's a great multiplayer game for those who like having fun.

^This. I don't know why anyone would be upset by this. It's positive.

Unless perhaps it wasn't even considered as just "Best Video Game" for being in a separate category.

You are arguing against society as it has been for literally over a hundred years. The West has a completely different social structure than the East, especially when compared to Japan which is a homogeneous nation. As you say that there is a sense of forcing children in the West to "grow up" which is a social structure that's been in place long before America itself was even founded. It originated in the European countries long, long before they branched out to the Americas. It is never as simple as "wish we thought more like this country..." when it comes to different nations.

There really is no point in comparing Japan to Western countries, you personally will only disappoint yourself, because in reality they will most definitely NEVER be similar. The time it has taken for Japan to evolve into the country it is today and the time it has taken Western countries to evolve into what they are today have taken so long and the changes have been so different it is practically impossible to change so drastically into a new society (unless there is an absolutly NECESSARY need to do so)

Unfortunately for you and others, video games are not NECESSARY and won't change a society's entire structure.

Sorry, but I don't buy that... and it can be a bit too challenging for some kids, depending on their age.

The category reeks of 'kids only' when I see it, and I am sure I am not alone. "Kids" should not be consolation
category to mean "Everyone" and I don't feel it's being used in that way here anyhow. To think Mario and company
are lumped together with the likes of Skylanders and Disney Infinity yet Lego games are more 'adult' boggles my mind.

Sigh...

Oh look, some NY guys decided to call themselves game critics and got together to give an award.

This industry is kind of a joke.

Shame for them but I do admit I tend to isolate for some of the dark stuff that is presented in mainstream media. Of course I know not all of it is bad but some stuff in their is sour and mean spirited for the sake of it. But oh well is a waste of time and energy just generalizing and talking in quantitative terms. As for me I like light hearted stories with subtle dark undertones and dark stories that are not shy about things like compassion and laughter.

That's what I was quietly thinking to myself.

We should start our own award show and give it all kinds of crazy categories. It'll have our own 'game o' year' then stuff like 'best game for babies' 'wannabe movie of the year' and other tongue in cheek stuff :P

Best game for babies, is Call of duty again.... I only see the under 12 crowd playing this game in large numbers

Games for kids and games for everyone are not one and the same, yet it seems like people want to lump them together.

As I see it, the fellas were just trying to please Nintendo fans with this nomination, the moment Mario 3D World was put against the other games in that category, Nintendo victory was assured and with that, a prize for Mario 3D World even if the game missed the "game of the year" category...too bad most here are seeing it as an insult instead.
