IGN RUMOR - Nintendo may show new hardware at E3

UPDATE 4 - Peer commented on the matter.

UPDATE 3 - IGN's Jose Otero had this to say...

"I understand why someone would consider what we discussed newsworthy, but this story completely ignores an important piece of context: We didn't trust these sources enough to run a story on IGN. It's a conversation, and sometimes we get carried away. Peer did make the above argument, but we also framed the discussion around the context that we weren't sure. Unfortunately, the author made no effort to convey that in his news story. If we believed what we'd heard, you wouldn't have found out about it on another site. We would have run that story ourselves. Just food for thought. I don't blame anyone for running with it, but omitting that context from the story is pretty shady. Again, I get it. But I'm here to tell you the discussion wasn't as simple as "this is for real, guys!"

UPDATE 2 - Now VideoGamer is jumping in on the bandwagon...

Original post...

I've listened to the episode and can confirm that these comments were made.

Coming from the most recent Nintendo Voice Chat podcast...

"We've heard rumors that Nintendo might be showing hardware at E3." - IGN editor Jose Otero

"They're absolutely going to show new hardware this year. No doubt in my mind that something... 'Cause I've heard from multiple people now. I've heard from someone who used to be at Nintendo; I've heard it from somebody on the third-party front." - Peer Schneider

I want to make it clear that this IGN discussion does not stem from the mention of new hardware that was found in the source code of Nintendo's E3 site. This discussion is from information that IGN's Peer Schneider has heard from various sources. The point about source info find from Nintendo's E3 site is brought up separately at a later point in the discussion.

It's obvious to me that nobody listened to the podcast. Looks like a circus broke loose in this thread. I've personally met with Peer before and he is honestly one of the absolute best sources of info in the industry, I have no idea where anyone else gets off saying otherwise, plus, that hardware rumor of "swappable" parts had nothing to do with what Peer said. It's funny how even he on the podcast he told people not to get excited because he honestly doesn't know what it is Nintendo is working on, but definitely something physical to put on store shelves. It could be a Wii U light gun, or a 3DS revision, but nothing major or huge to get freaked out over. Calm down.

But I'm pretty sure there will be some QOL accessory that compliments the Wii U to try to boost sales.

when a multiplayer videogame site needs hits on its home page they just come out with a rumour on nintendo...

then all nintendians start to follow that...then all nintendo haters start to post on neogaf and dualshockers and other multiplayer sites...

recently that watch dog disaster from ubisoft/gamestop italy given for truth by wiitalia, gumesurf and other sites...

nintendo is so loved but also so hated so when you "produce" some rumour you can assure some hits on your homepage...eheheh

Correct. Peer just said they were going to the new retro game at E3, NOT that it would be Metroid. I swear this thread is just full of BS...

I think IGN is probably right here. I bet it is a Wii U Slim where they have figured out how to sell Wii U's without the gamepad which knocks $100 off the price tag. They also figured out a way to patch games on the Wii U Slim that required the gamepad so you can just play them on a normal controller.

That would be my guess. If not dropping the gamepad, they are still coming out with the Wii U Slim, it'll just be less expensive somehow like they did with the 2DS.

Either the slim or they consider the QOL product to be a new console?

If you listened to the podcast, Peer said he does NOT believe that the Wii U will EVER be sold without the GamePad, being essential to the ecosystem of Wii U. He didn't mention any hardware revisions either.

What he did say was They were going to show off a new brand which was wrong but doesn't mean they might not be working on that now.

Also a fair point. Plans at E3 change even up until the day before. But you're right, doesn't mean that they were going to show something but decided to wait and show it later.

They've been in the black before. MS wasn't making a profit on the Xbox brand for years.

Any way if this happens to be true if it's for the Wii-U I would guess it's a pro controller revision that add's analog triggers and a headphone jack. If It's for 3ds may be its a nfc Portal and have a 3ds version of that nfc game Iwata has talked about in the past.

Aside from the fact that the podcast is indeed not talking about a new console per se, I still see a Wii U redesign likely.

During the previous generation, both Sony and Microsoft introduced redesigns of their systems more than once, mixing the hard drive size, changing the design of the system and even the way of loading discs, removing some elements (axing the PS2 backwards compatibilty from the PS3 being perhaps the most famous) but still improving overall performance as much as they could (the first Xbox 360 redesign for example was particularly tailored to avoid the red ring of death issue).

Now the Wii U is in a situation that by all means looks even worse than how the 360 and the PS3 were faring approaching their second year in the market, so a redesign wouln't be out of question.

@RD3AV5
I'm pretty sure in an earlier podcast this year, they made their "5 e3 predictions", Peer did say that. His reasoning was "Nintendo are looking at what sells, and they see that FPS's top the chart." Something like that.

Even if true, I'd bet it's just a hardware revision of some type. Quite possibly another useless 3DS rehash, or perhaps a Wii U redesign to attempt to make it more likable to the general public.

But... Nintendo has surprised before.

Wii u probably has around 6 million units sitting in a warehouse right now the chance of a redesign are slim.

Crazy idea but.

Wii U crammed into the Tablet Controller.

Can be played with anywhere.

Has HDMI output to TV.

DS/3DS Cartridge Slot.

Will allow you to transfer all Wii U/3DS eShop/Virtual Consoles games to it from your current Wii U/3DS.

Wii Shop/Wii Virtual Console will be 100% Wii U compatible/transferable.

No disc drive. Mainly download focused to compete with tablet devices.

Nintendo "App Store" with various general apps.

Wifi only, Nintendo will consider a mobile 4G version down the road if their is demand.

N64,GameCube,Wii,Dreamcast,Sega CD,Sega 32x channels added for Wii U.

Lynx,Neo Geo Pocket,Wonderswan channels for 3DS.

Unifies the Nintendo Home and Handheld into one market.

Some kind of rebate plan for sending in Wii U and 3DS retail games into digital games.

Some kind of rebate plan for those users who bought games across 3DS/Wii U Virtual Console.

Previous Wii Virtual Console games will transfer with the same upgrade charge per title. Wii Shop games will carry over like DSiWare to 3DS.

Yeah, like we haven't seen enough of these already. Remember the whole "Miyamoto retiring soon" or "Iwata going to step down" rumors?

Anyway, could possibly be a redesign. I can't see a new console happening for a few more years, home console or handheld... it's too early.

I would love a combined 3DS + Wii U...a bit like that Nintendo Fusion rumor mentioned. Or a slimmer GamePad with 10-12hr battery life. I don't need another 3DS though! Unless they do something major with it which I doubt they will as it fragments/could fragment their user base.

I've always been a single console owner, and I've never had a problem. (Well, one console and one handheld.) I never manage to play all of the games that I want to on a single console, why would I want more?

For f*cks sake, shut up and go buy a PS4! No one, including Nintendo, gives two sh*ts. If you do, maybe you'll stop whining about everything all the time and actually enjoy being a gamer. There is nothing wrong with getting your gaming fix on multiple devices. It's clear to anyone who frequents the site that Nintendo isn't doing it for you anymore. Stop being a bitter troll and buy a console that DOES offer what you are looking for.

Also, I heard of this site called GoingSony.com. It's pretty sweet. You should check it out sometime. :)

what is scary is that there are still people that cannot understand that you can live as a happy gamer with a pc a 3ds and a wiiu...

I still cannot understand instead how is possible to live without mario and zelda like some of nintendo haters do...!!!!

Love em or hate em, IGN rarely run random rumour stories which is why they didn't post this on the main site, and Peer Schneider is even less likely to put his name to a frivolous rumor. And he's clarified that it'll be a minor hardware release not anything like a new console.

What I think it could be:
* Redesigned console Wii U / 3DS (XL) / 2DS
* New peripheral for a Flagship Game
* A limited Edition 25th Anniversary Gameboy :)
* Companion Hardware (I hope not, I'd rather companion iOS/Android apps)
* Something only Nintendo could think off.
