Super Mario Odyssey - Cappy's origins, Captain Toad, Mario/Peach's relationship, throwbacks

A portion of a Game Informer interview with director Kenta Motokura and producer Yoshiaki Koizumi...

GI: Mario's new has is named Cappy, but where does he come from? He looks like a ghost or something, is that correct? Is he like a hat-spirit?

Koizumi: We're not ready to reveal a lot of Cappy's backstory or secrets about that character, but he is going to be Mario's companion as he travels around all these different kingdoms in this title.

GI: We also ran across Captain Toad in New Donk City, and it was fun to see him. It seems like you guys have a fondness for him as well. Do you hope to do more with him in the future as well?

Motokura: Well I'd certainly be happy if you were looking forward to the possibility of a future Captain Toad game, but none we can mention just yet. But, Captain Toad is also an adventurer, so he will be wandering about in different kingdoms of Super Mario Odyssey.

GI: Why does Mario want to stop the wedding between Peach and Bowser. Is he interested in Peach romantically, or does he have some other motives?

Koizumi: I've always thought that Mario carries a bit of a torch for Peach. I think that's true even back in the 2D Mario games. If not, he wouldn't be wasting his time rescuing her over and over again.

GI: Do you think Princess Peach feels the same way?

Koizumi: The heart of a woman is a mystery.

GI: In Super Mario Galaxy 2, there was a throwback Galaxy level that was a remake of a Nintendo 64 level. Will there be any throwback levels in Super Mario Odyssey?

Motokura: We don't have any levels that are taken, let's say, specifically from something like Super Mario 64, but we do have elements in the game that will make the folks who played Super Mario 64 happy when they encounter them.

I agree, it got a chuckle out of me.

Captain Toad Treasure Tracker 2 please! The first Captain Toad on Wii U may be in my top 3 games for that system and yes I enjoyed it more than 3D World.

I also hope that Mario and Peach get married at the end of the game and Bowser stops kidnapping peach for good for the rest of the series. Which hopefully in turn lets peach become a permanent playable character in the series or if not playable a side character you don't have to constantly rescue. Also if Bowser doesn't kidnap Peach he can do other things or even sit out the next couple games for a new villain or something.

Super Princess Peach 2 on the Switch

I'd prefer Super Princess Daisy, but since that will never happen, we'll go with your idea.

Or Mario & Luigi Valentine's Distress where M&L team up with Peach & Daisy to save Mushroom Kingdom from a new evil who is trying to steal all the glory from the Kingdom and Daisy arrives because Sarasaland is under the villain's control

I remember the rumor of Mario's Wii U adventure was "Super Mario" and was like a Mario 64 styled play where Mario and gang returned from a vacation and Wario and Waluigi invaded the castle and vandalized the place and Mario was set to reclaim it.

The heart of a woman is a mystery. Wow deep.

I just like how detailed the Chain Chomps get with each Mario game

I really hope you encounter Captain Toad again somewhere and Toadette with him. The two of them are so perfect in Treasure Tracker, we need a bigger series out of it.

This was a good week for snarky answers from Japanese developers. Koizumi, Ono, and Miyamoto all had interviews that took some unforeseen turns.

"Why does Mario want to stop the wedding between Peach and Bowser"

uh, maybe because the last time that happened, it literally kickstarted the apocalypse.

Such an underappreciated game.

I want to play Captain Toad Treasure Tracker so badly. I hope it comes to Switch Virtual Console someday because I don't really want to pick up a Wii-U again just to play it.

Sooooo he wouldn't rescue Peach over and over again unless he had a thing for her?

Heh, that's kinda funny.

Koizumi: I've always thought that Mario carries a bit of a torch for Peach.

I've never heard this expression before

I actually thought that Mario and Pauline were an item. They knew each other before Princess Peach. I wonder if Pauline is jealous. I don't think it's just a coincidence that she is so prominent in a game were Peach is getting married.

I know it's a long shot, but I think a great way to end Super Mario Odyssey, would be for Mario to finally propose to Peach. It's about time this series finally evolves in story telling. If it just ends with Mario saving Peach from Bowser again, it will feel underwhelming, but if we saw Mario kneel down and pull out a wedding ring, only to see Peach give a gleeful response, that would be one heck of a way to end this game, and surprise the gamers who have rooted for Mario and Peach to finally get together. It would be perfect, because chances are, Mario will be in a tux, and Peach will still be in her wedding dress during the ending, so it be perfect for Mario to take the opportunity to finally express his feelings for her.

If Nintendo still insists on having Bowser constantly kidnap Peach, then I don't think her getting engaged/married to Mario will really change anything. Peach can be Mario's fiance or wife, yet still need to be saved in future games. What will having Mario and Peach getting married really hurt? I think this series needs a little something to excite the fans, and that would be one way to do it. It would be better than just reusing the same cliche of Mario saving her, and getting a kiss.

Captain Toad is like the Adventurer in Bravely Default...he's always one step ahead and probably OP.

Mario should stop getting into other people's business and just let Bowser and Peach marry.
