No Doubt says that they agreed to appear in Band Hero, but not in the way that Activision has represented them. It seems like we have another Kurt Cobain-style case on our hands.

No Doubt's members say that they approved their appearance in Band Hero for 3 songs, but Activision allows their avatars to be used in over 60 songs, and you can also pull out specific band members for mix-and-match play on other songs. Clearly No Doubt is upset about this, and aims to seek damages from Activision.

LOL Love people who don't fully read contracts. Don't they have a lawyer who is suppose to do that?

Either way, how is it damaging to them?
I don't think anyone will look down upon them if they see a video game No Doubt band member singing another song.

Ah. Disappointed that a band I like seems like they're just out for money.

I love No Doubt, but they're idiots on this one. Just be happy you're in the game. You will probably sell more music now.

Why do they care?

If their going to be looked down upon for anything it's money grabbing, not because the avatars can be used in other songs. The Kurt Cobain issue was understandable, this is just pointless.

I remember No Doubt for humiliating themselves on Canadian T.V. by calling themselves "No Doot." Their own stupidity got them into trouble, no doot aboot it, eh!

ummm, how is kurt cobains issue understandable?

These artists reallly need to deflate there heads, its just a freakin game. Besides that, they dont like to sing other songs than there own? not like they have a catalog of hits.

Once I saw this on Kotaku I had to head over to gonintendo.com cause I knew RMC would post this right away lol.

I'm sure activision is going to win this lawsuit by a landslide, bands don't even take the time to read what they are signing.

It's great to see how people here know so much about the contract between Activision and No Doubt. Given that this is the third complaint about how they are handling these situations, I'm starting to believe the artists over Activision. Also, Kotick is a dick.

@Mintty

Remember the internets erupting in laughter off Kurt Cobain going YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH-BOIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII? Well some of the more serious Nirvana fans just shook their heads and wondered how low Courtney Love has stooped for money.
Wannabe ska kids will wonder what morals No Doubt has left when they see virtual Gwen Stefani singing Hillary Duff's "So Yesterday"

I'm not defending No Doubt because this was an obvious cash-in, were they money-grubby? Yes. Did they get out-money grubbed by Activision? Yes.
Their lawyer must be pretty stupid to not read the fine print after the Kurt Cobain scandal.

@ejamer

I only counter two, also, Jimi Hendrix estate would only let the avatar be used within the Hendrix songs, they made sure of it, they had lawyers all over the contract.

Everyone sue Activision into the ground. They deserve it for making so many darn music games.

@XCWarrior:

Yes of course. Because a company not making games you like is definitely grounds to abuse the legal system and waste more of our tax dollars to help try to make a bunch of multi-millionaires richer.

It's BS like this that makes me wish the music industry would go belly up. You got ungrateful untalented bands who were successful at one point in their career literally suing over the use of their bloody imagery... as if over a hundred indie bands with exponentially more talent wouldn't kill to be in that position.

Greed, greed, greed.

On the one hand, I'm kinda rooting for No Doubt on this one. On the other hand... it's kinda their fault for not reading the fine print...

Is it really that big of a deal? Sheesh. Courtney Love and No Doubt are making such a big deal out of nothing.

Band Hero lets you swap avatars and band members. Since No Doubt lent their likeness to this game, then Activision has the right to use their likeness for this swap-out feature.
