May 30, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: Wii, Rumors, Nintendo in general

Nintendo has been doing really well with holding back information on their E3 presser, but now it looks like Japanese newspaper Nikkei has decided to spill some beans.

According to the article, Wii Fit Plus is coming, it's going to have some new online functionality, and the system will have a greater accuracy overall.

Next up, we also learn that a new Mario game is in the works, and it's due to come out the second half of this year. Could that be the big title that GameStop said was coming? No mention of platform was made.

Article here

UPDATE - We have a translation of some of the information direct from the article. Thanks to Totodile for the heads up!

The new "Wii Fit Plus" game will now allow you to compare your body weight or health with friends and distant family members, thanks to an added online functionality. Additionally, a improved measurement capabilities will allow for a better health control. Special exercises destined to aged people, and aiming to lower their body charge will also be added.

The second half of the year will also see the release of a new entry in the popular "Mario" game series. Their aim is to support the decelerating sales of the Wii video game console.

Are their truly any surprises left for E3, when everyone "spills the beans" and gives endless snippets/clues/sneak peaks. No wonder E3 isn't what it used to be...you freaken know all about it before you even step in the door.

Why go?

New Mario game? Hmm, is it a spinoff (such as a sports title) or a new platformer? Also, I wonder which system it's coming out for, I actually kinda hope it's for the DS. DS needs a new Mario game. :)

Wii Fit Plus sounds intriguing, I might actually have a shot at obtaining this game, unlike the original which is constantly sold out.

NSMB2 is what I've been hoping for. We just had a Wii Mario game, so the DS is the logical guess (especially seeing that the original NSMB sold a bazillion copies).

Not to mention that a new Mario game and a new Zelda game would be an excellent way to stimulate DSi sales (especially if they included a couple DSi unique features in each game).

Hopefully they stick with the same theme as the original NSMB and make NSMB2 a contemporary version of the original SMB2 (U.S. version, that is).

You know what would be interesting, is instead of making a Paper Mario DS or a New Super Mario Bros 2, Nintendo decides to make a sequel to Super Mario RPG. What New Super Mario Bros. was to the old sidescroller Mario games perhaps "New Super Mario RPG" could be to Super Mario Rpg.

Paper Mario is the spiritual sequel to Super Mario RPG, but there hasn't been a real sequel to the game. Maybe Nintendo could either make a sequel to it, or a game very similar to it? Just throwing out ideas, I myself haven't played Super Mario RPG, so I can't really say whether this would be a solid idea or not.

We already know, Professor Layton 2, New Mario, and WiiFit Plus are gonna be there, but I hope Nintendo has some other big surprises in store. I really want this year to be the year with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games (Metroid Trilogy doesnt count). I hope I am not disappointed,

Eh. I don't care much for Super Mario RPG. It really was like Final Fantasy with Mario characters, imo.

The Paper Mario (and especially Mario & Luigi series on handhelds) are the definitive Mario RPGs. Although I did not like SPM and would rate it below the original Mario RPG as well.

Hmm. I'm not sure what I want from Mario.

Considering my top 3 games of all time are all Mario games, I think it would be difficult to top anything. But hey, Galaxy is one of those top 3 games, and that came out recently.

A successor to NSMB would be okay, but I just hope they will bring it up to the difficulty and complexity of SMB3 and SMW.

But actually, what I'm hoping is they do something as amazing and as wildly creative as Galaxy. I'm not sure they could pull it off so soon, but that would be great.

Needless to say, I'm very excited to see what this turns out to be!

Well i'm glad that there is a new wii fit since third parties are not even capable of replicating some of the control scheme(especially ski and marble). And there is always the possibility that they will add other activities.

I don't think Nikkei journalist can make the difference between mario party, baseball ,mario galaxy or new super mario bros.

Mario galaxy 2 would be the best news for me . New super mario bros 2, a close second.

But it's probably one of the sports game or marioparty9(which i like).

Or maybe the journalist just discovered that the two best selling game of nintendo are wiifit and new supermariobros

I don't think it'll be NSMB 2. I just can't see Nintendo dropping a new Zelda AND a new Mario at the same time on the same system. They would cannibalize each other.

As for it being a Wii Mario...that could mean anything. New Mario PARTY, perhaps? That seems quite likely. Mario Galaxy 2? Seems less likely, but I'll cross my skeptical little fingers.

Most likely it'll be a new Mario Party for Wii and DS/i, tis too early for 'Galaxy 2' or any other sports spinoff [and Galaxy didn't do that well over there in Japan, so a minigame approach may be Nintendo's next course of Mario action over there].

Given that this came from the Nikkei newspaper - which, if I'm recalling correctly, also broke the DSi story - I think it's probably safe to assume this isn't a rumor. The new Wii Sports is hardly a surprise (given how much money Nintendo's made from this game they'd have to be crazy not to put out a sequel). With a new Mario game (apparently) being announced, Red Steel 2 making its official debut, and (hopefully) Pikmin 3, E3 should be a whole lot of fun :)

By the way, here's a reported translation of the article from the Neogaf forum:

Nintendo planning a new Wii Fit this Fall.

Nintendo is aiming to announce a new Wii Fit this fall. Making use of network functionalities, you'll be able to compete with distant friends or family members in weighting or health "competitions". The measurement of the weight or the center of gravity will be improved compared to the current version. The second half of the year will also see the release of a new entry in the popular "Mario" game series. Their aim is to support the decelerating sales of the Wii video game console.

Wii Fit is a game that uses the "balance board" to measure your weight or center of gravity, allows you to train your muscles, practice yoga, maintain your balance, exercise your oxygenation, and forge you body. Supported by non-gamers throughout the world, it has sold more than 18 million copies to date.

It could be possible. I mean with Galaxy, they had to think up the concept of having Mario in space and how Mario will react to being in space, the engine, etc. As it is right now though, they already have the main template, they just need to think up puzzles, and spice up the graphics a little more.

Of course there's other stuff involved in making a sequel to Galaxy, but I'm sure it'd pale in comparison to what was necessary to create the original.

IF we get a new Wii core Mario title, it will not be Galaxy 2. Nintendo hopefully learned their lesson with the mistakes of Galaxy and 3D Mario games having zero potential to sell to the expanded audience like NSMB did. The 3D Mario formula is not as memorable as the 2D Mario one; this is why we still play old 2D Mario games while Sunshine is largely forgotten and 64 is only played when you feel nostalgic. Sadly Galaxy will slowly be forgotten as years goes by, because it doesn't have that classic 2D Mario charm.

You can screenshot this: If the new Mario game is for the Wii and is not a spin-off, it will be a 2.5D game (or a very small chance, an actual 2D game like Wario Land Shake).

if wiifitplus is just that ,not really interested

well if it's indeed mario galaxy 2,and even it's a simply an extension pack ; that would the best news possible .A new zelda ds and a new entry in the main mario series , sorry but that's just too good

But i agree mario galaxy did not explode the charts in japon . It still managed to outsold every single ps3 game ,even sold 200 000 more than the über MGS4 , it also sold more than mario sunshine. It's in the top 10 of best seller for this generation of home console in japan. With its continuous sale of last year only , it would be in the top5 ps3.
And worldwide sales of 8 millions put it above any ps3 titles and probably behind only 2-3xbox game .

Mario Galaxy is the most successful SINGLE player game of this generation of home system. The fourth best selling game on wii.

I am trying to convince myself that mariogalaxy2 is real , but it's too early (only three game in 13years!).

And marioparty is really more likely .

I'm kinda fed up , because those rumors will really make the nintendo conference a huge let down.

The zelda is absolutely absurd, it doesn't matter that you don't think zelda ds is not a proper zelda, nintendo does! ANd they certainly will not promote another zelda instead of promoting the one that comes in a few month. So why do the pro keep saying that it should be at e3?

I feel that Galaxy was an awesome game too, but sadly sales were far outpaced by NSMB. I wasn't really talking about the quality of the games, I was talking about replayability.

Ask yourself this question: After you finished the game, unlocked Luigi and finished the game with him; Did you have the urge to play it again? I know most people here will say they haven't. Galaxy was a fantastic game to play through....

Which brings me to the point I'm trying to make (if I'm even trying anymore, I admit I'm just typing as I go): What makes the 2D games "better"? The question most likely is due to the fact they were arcade style games, while the 3D ones were not. This was what made the games so great, and why we still play them; playing the stages, trying to master them, honing our skills; the 3D Mario games lack this.

While I am too hard on MM9 at times (largely because how Capcom handled the project), this was the perfect example of what is missing in today's games. It was difficult and required mastery (even if it was just stage memorization); this made the game so great, and why we will still be playing it for years while we won't 90% of games released today.

If they announce a New Super Mario World (NSMB was great at bringing back the feel of the Super Mario Bros. games, but for the next game I want it to emulate the feel of Super Mario World rather than Bros.) then I'd be blown away.

Unfortunately I'm kinda doubting the possibility. If it's a new Wii Mario then I just hope it's not Mario Party. Okay I liked MP when it first started, but I lost interest in the series around part 3. If you like Mario Party, that's fine, but I'm more of a Warioware man. If it's a spin off then at least be something that Mario hasn't done yet. Lastly, if it's Galaxy 2 then I will go "wow."

Wii Fit Plus will sell well with those who enjoy Wii Fit, like my mom. I think I now know what to get her for Christmas (she also said that she'd like both Mario and Sonic Olympics games; I should introduce her to Warioware since I have a feeling she'd like it).

This is annoying.

I mean, I am glad they are making a new Wii Mario, I guess, I loved Galaxy, (as Luigi, most of all), but... really?

It is way too soon, both for a new Wii one (been less than 2 years) AND for a core Mario (one per console, save the NES).

Zelda is much more deserving of a sequel on Wii by now.

- Always 2 Zeldas per console/system, generally
- It is nearly 3 years old and was done in 2005 (for GCN) and was developed since The Wind Waker was finished. By that logic, the next Zelda should be halfway if not already done by now.
- We still don't have a proper Wii Zelda to begin with. TP is just a New Play Control ahead of its time.

Whatever.

Not pleased there is a Wii Fit 2. It is almost as though Nintendo is out of ideas. If all we get is Wii Sports 2, Wii Fit 2 and Galaxy 2, then I am pissed. Thank god for 3rd parties this year.

In the case of Mario, not explicitly. However, Miyamoto has strongly hinted at a follow-up to Mario Galaxy, and when Miyamoto hints at things, they often come true.

Zelda's actually a bit more explicit. Miyamoto said at the roundtable last year that the Wii Zelda team was at work (and also "not to forget about the DS Zelda team" ;) ). Also, MotionPlus just begs for Zelda.

Also, it's going to be hilarious if Nintendo shows off Mario & Zelda and people start b**** when months ago they'd have sold a leg to see Nintendo debut two big "core" games like that.

Personnaly, I don't really need a new Mario, we just had Mario Galaxy, and while i would love more exploration à la Mario 64, I don't need a Mario adventure game so soon. I would love an online Mario Party with dlc, or an rpg, or a 2D game on the DS, more like Super Mario Bros. 3 with a lot of power ups.

If WiiFit plus is playable online, then it's a big news. More and more people are gonna connect their wii to the Internet, and Nintendo will have to make things better.

Anyway, while these two might not probably be the main topics of the conference, I'm pretty cross at Nikkei to leak like that. it's really RUDE and disrespectful. If you want to leak Microsoft or Sony's conference, do it, the only thing they can do is copying, or redesigning their hardware. But the main goal of Nintendo this year is the software.

Wtf. This is absolutely appalling to even read. Not only are you completely wrong about this, but to even mention that both Sony & Microsoft don't have any software to show is downright ignorant.

However, in regards to this news...it seems plausible and it's most likely true. In fact, I'm going to agree with the majority by saying I'd want a New Super Mario Bros. 2. I think it's time for a new one considering the success of the first title.

If they are making a NSMB2 (which I hope is not what they call it), I hope that it is like SMB3. As much as I like SMW, a new Mario game that was more like SMB3 would make my year. No Yoshi. Lots of new power-ups. Lots of new worlds. Maybe the Koopalings would be cool. At least some great bosses. No Bowser Jr. Some cool/non-gimmicky touch screen use. A new art style; 2.5D was cool but I'd like something unique. At the very least, the difficulty and length need to be bumped up a notch. Those are my only real complaints about NSMB. I got all the red coins on my first play-through which still didn't take too long.

I was going to say the same thing as autobzooty. It doesn't really have anything to do with the casual appeal of 2D VS. 3D, it's the fact you're comparing the DS to Wii. If you were right, Super Paper Mario would have outsold Galaxy, and obviously, that did not happen.

It did almost sound like you were talking about quality there though, with words like "charm" and such. Me, personally, I love Sunshine and Galaxy, and I prefer them quite a bit to any of the 2D games. While I have a very deep-rooted respect for the franchise and its influence on other games, the good ol' 2D platformers, compared to others, are just too loose, frenetic and inconsistent...for 2D, it becomes a question for me of why play Mario when I could play, say, Mega Man?

And I don't think there's an argument in comparing replayability of Galaxy to the 2D games. After collecting all those stars TWICE, why would you want to play it again right away? I wouldn't, but in some years I know I will. I couldn't care less about mastering stages and "honing my skills" in the 2D games, just an annoying speed-runner trait if you ask me.

Nah... But it's more likely than 'Galaxy 2' at this point.

And on that note... I don't like the way people in this thread here are talking about a [possible] Galaxy sequel, and liking it to being just an expansion pack to Galaxy [when many folk on here complain about cash-ins, ports, remakes, spinoffs and fickle DLC from many other certain companies].

You guys don't make it sound very appealing... I'd rather a new direction built upon Galaxy's ideas than an obvious rehash [something Nintendo don't tend to do when it comes to the main games in their core series].

In short, am I the [only] one who wants that here? Another three or even four years for the next one would be peachy with me.

I don't want a rush job.

[Hmmm, and why aren't HTML tags working anymore...?]

What will be funny is when they announce an amazing Mario game during the presser, and people complain because "we already knew about it."

@ Kirbylol

I definatly have the urge to play the game again. It's the same as any fantastic game. You play it to death, leave it for a while and then pick it up again for another playthrough. Same with the 2D and early 3D versions of Mario. Don't forget the 2D early versions have had plenty of time to regain appeal under a nostalgic factor unlike Galaxy.

I know what your trying to say, but I would argue both games are very accessible. In essence...both games are platforming marvels regardless of dimension.

I would also argue that the success of New Super Mario Bros is for a variety of reasons. Yes its a fantastic game, but also the ds userbase far exceeds the wii. Its also a game that has been out longer than Galaxy. finally the game is a pack in with new a ds system quite often.

Eight million sales of Galaxy...is that really a mistake on Nintendo's part?. How is this inaccessable to the expanded audience.
Surely people were arguing the opposite...that it was too oriented towards casual?

I agree with you. What I want to see is a Mario Game realy different than the other, but with a sense of exploration more like Mario 64. And that takes time.

I completely agree. I sincerely hope there'll be an announcement for Zelda but I don't think it'll happen.

You definitely have a point and that crossed my mind too, but on the flipside...Wii gamers are pressuring them to deliver the goods. I'm just going to have to put my faith in the team. Nintendo rarely screws up when it comes to main series Marios.

If it were a Galaxy sequel, it will more likely be things that they wanted to improve after they finished the game.. so if it's this close to Galaxy's release I think it would be similar to it.

Anyway, I don't even think its a Galaxy sequel.

I'm leaning towards a new Mario Party title, or something of the sort.

If it is a galaxy sequel i think it would be more original than just more levels etc too.. mario games don't tend to be too similar. i have to agree with some other people that for some reason galaxy just doesn't have much replayability, compared to other mario games. But I have faith that when the day comes that galaxy 2 is unveiled that it will surprise us all somehow from a gameplay standpoint.

(This is Dasher Midsaer, if any of you know me.)

I really hope this is the new 3D Mario or a 2D Mario, and not a spinoff. The RPG series has gone for a bad turn, and the sports are primarily lacking what made them special originally. Kart game is too soon... so i expect yeah, a New SMB 2 or a new Super Mario 3D title.

I'm hoping for a 2D Wii Mario. Or something that better encompasses what is most loved about Mario than the 3D installments have.

A Mario Wii game, huh? I'm guessing a Galaxy sequel running on a similar/same engine, hence the quick turn-around. If this is true then I will be very happy!

@DonnyDarko420

And that fan pressure is what worries me, sure we went from Sunshine [a love it or hate it] title to Galaxy but will Galaxy to 'Galaxy 2' be and [feel] new enough to cater to the Nintendo fanbase? We are a very fickle bunch [as I covered in my previous post], as is the gaming world in general [more than ever].

I still think any announcement this year would be too soon, even if it does come out next year [or preferably the year after].

Still, I guess it's not as bad as sending death threats to the creator to make a certain sequel or two...

I'm starting to really get annoyed with some of the Nintendo fanbase. We complain about how Nintendo is ignoring the core after, like, 1.25 years of "drought" from them, yet when the hint of a new Mario game- which are almost always high quality games- comes around, it is met with a good chunk of reluctance to enjoy it. I'd like to hope that a Wii Zelda or Wii Star Fox would de-fickle the fanbase, but I'm probably setting my expectations too high.

If you want my opinion, I don't really care for 3D Mario titles.

*ducks and run*

At least, it'd make the whiners happy. I have S&P2 and lots of third party titles to make me happy.

Um, is this all Wii is getting this year? Mario is great, but I really doubt we'll get something in the same vein as Super Mario Galaxy with such little time, unless Nintendo really hid that secret well.

Maybe 2D Mario, but that's like WiiWare and shouldn't be considered for driving Wii sales again.

I'm actually more interested in the plethora of Nintendo games that showed last October. Gimme those this year!

And stupid Wii Fit Plus better have a customizable routines like most fitness DVDs now for convenience! Pain in the ass to just keep clicking and calibrating!

Don't ever mension "Mario Bros" in the same breath as "The popular 'Mario' series".... Because the Mario Bros games are about platforming. The rest of the series can be anything, and most likely, a DO NOT WANT.

I don't think a DS game will support the decelerating sales of Wii in Japan. Nor that they would announce a game that was already released in Japan.
Remember, this is a Japanese newspaper.

Too man people calling a DS game or a Mario Party without realizing the situation of the Wii in Japan.
