June 4, 2009 by Deux Michaels Filed Under: Nintendo in general

It's safe to say that everyone has a little something planned for the NEXT next generation, but I don't suppose we have to worry about buying more systems soon. Still, Iwata told Bloomberg that once developers begin to say that improvements to games can no longer be made for Wii, then the Big N will be ready to bring out its next console. The man also added “None of our developers is making that kind of complaint.”

I wonder how much longer we'll have to wait.

Woooohh!! Can you imagine? A Wii, with PS3/360 graphics and more memory.. And all that other stuff Wii's missing.

Can't wait!

graphic wise there is a need for a new console, but there is plenty of room for control improvements...

You are sitting around waiting for the next system? Have a fun few years at least. I am not even thinking about it that way.

This won't be for a long while. Aside from developers who blindly rant about how games should be 'art' and 'like movies', I can't imagine developers being fond of having to start over from scratch, AGAIN, to appeal to a very low salesbase compared to what they just came from, AGAIN, right when they feel they've gotten a full grasp of what a system can do. Again.

Now that interface has replaced 'zomg graffix' as the most important thing to far, far more consumers than not, the Wii has a long ways to go with how it can change and improve.

I don't see anything that can surpass Wii other than virtual reality.

But the tech (and costs) aren't there for VR games yet. Though if and when Nintendo sends out it's next console, I do hope there's more power so that the developers can have more options in their games.

Also an online system that's not friend code based would be nice. I'd take a system governed by one code only over the current system governed by a billion or more codes currently.

Seeing that Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid Other M are for 2010 (which likely means that Zelda will be for 2011)...you're looking at 2012 at the very earliest.

All I care about ATM is the impending release of WM+. It'll fix virtually all control issues with Wii games, and usher in a new era for Wii. It's pretty exciting. :)

Seconded. But even for WM+ there will still be room for improvement... there is no perfect tech :)

Exactly, this is more accurately the kind of upgrades the Wii will get, the really important stuff. The MotionPlus is essentially getting a whole new system of possibilities in games, except instead of paying 200+, it's only 20, or 10 extra for a game.

You are referring to Wii Motion Squared? lol I am just making that up.

But yeah, as Malstrom points out, because the Wii has made the focus the controller and not the graphics, the controller can be updated a long time before a new console is needed.

I'm glad for your sake: because though I'm curious too I think if I let myself admit how curious I was it would make the years drag on!

Thankfully there are some pretty amazing games coming out now for our little ol' system.

They are probably still throwing around ideas for what the next console will be like in terms of graphical power and such, and they're probably thinking of a few controller ideas, but honestly I think the Wii's successor won't come around for quite a while.

A bigger question would be when the DS's successor will come out. DS has proven to be a very long lasting system (very much like the original Game Boy, which didn't get a true successor until 2001 with the GBA [Game Boy Color was still "Game Boy," it just had the added ability to display games in full color and not just black and green]). I can imagine the next Nintendo handheld will probably take the touch screen to greater heights, and maybe even include motion sensing and camera functions, and have graphics that are about on par with the Gamecube.

Well Miyamoto just said New Super Mario Bros. Wii is too maxed out with its DS graphics and 4-player mode to have any online. So I guess its time for a new system, right Nintendo? When a game that screams online is limited by the hardware (despite its simplistic visuals and presentation), a game from Miyamoto no less, then you know you made a mistake releasing such limited hardware.

On top of this HD televisions are becoming quite common now, so an HD Wii would be nice in a year or two.

I just want the new system to be able to accept my credit card directly. I must've lost 3 or 4 in the Wii trying to get more Wii Points!

I don't think NSMBW screams online. To me it sounds, get 3 buddies and have a blast.

I love nintendo to death but when i think about it, they're known for doing the bare minimum when it comes to hardware. If their next console sports HD and it tops out at 720P a lot of people will be pissed including myself. I would like for them to take bigger risks when it comes to hardware and processing power. Also i would like to see their online service totally revamped; maybe offer the free service with friend codes and a pay service with gamer tags and a better online experience overall. The new system doesn't even have to have memory for all i care just as long as we have an option to use SDHC cards and external flash and hard drives. I wish they had something like a townhall meeting with wii owners so they can address our comments and concerns.

Nintendo will drag out the Wii as long as they can so as to take advantage of dropping technology costs (which is also why MotionPlus took so long to come out).

I kind of bet that Nintendo will be the first one out of the gate for consoles next gen. It'll be about on par with late 360 games graphically, output in HD, and have an input device that's ahead of wm+ and natal, so that sony and microsoft will again be playing catchup as far as controls go.

oh, and it'll be priced starting at $300. The next Wii Sports type game will be bundled with it, and a new Smash Bros. will launch with it

coming in 2012

srry, but im pretty sure that we still have a good amount of time left with the wii since motionplus isn't out yet. with that piece alone, it will change how we play games, so im guessing it will be 4 more years before we will hear about the next system.

I think Nintendo's console will actually rival the competiors graphic wise next gen belive it or not. I remeber hearing from both Microsoft and Sony (on different occasions) that there next consoles wont make as big as a graphical jump as from last gen to this gen. If that does becomes true then the graphic difference between the next Wii and the PS4/720 might just be as big as PS2 and Xbox/GCN.

@stealthpengu

'Wii HD' won't come out in 2012, but it'll be ignored even if it has full HD graphics and options [the others will be using the newest thing and HD will be old hat].

It's gonna happen, sadly. People are never satisfied for long [gamers being the perfect grouped example].

Developers like High Voltage Software are proving that there is a lot of untapped technical potential in the Wii and with WM+ only a week away, I can't see developers running out of ideas for the next few years.

There's still a lot of power that developers can tap from the Wii, and I really doubt that any of them have fully mastered motion controls yet, so I don't see a Wii successor coming for a long time. Which is a good thing, as it saves me money. :D
