September 25, 2009 by The News Team Filed Under: GoNintendo Updates, Nintendo in general

Bumped to the front page

Of course, the list is causing controversy, but I'm very happy to see you guys discussing it! Please, feel free to side with us, or let us have it in the comments!

Ah, the good-old days of the Nintendo Entertainment System. You remember those times, right? Actually, some of you may not have a clue about the 8-bit days, simply because you weren't around during them! That's why GoNintendo and GameDaily have teamed up to bring you guys our top 10 picks for the best software that the NES had to offer. Now remember, these are our choices, and ours alone! If you were one of those old-school NES games, we don't want you getting upset because your favorite game didn't make the cut! Let's just hope that our picks fall nicely in-line with what you guys know, love and remember fondly.

Number 10 - Duck Hunt

DuckHunt.gif

A light gun game that gets packed in with your NES? How much better can you get!? Talk about bringing the arcade experience home. Duck Hunt was one of the most amazing experiences on the NES, for its time. Being able to point and shoot at your TV screen to play a game...there was nothing else quite like it. On top of all that, we got the iconic character of the laughing dog out of this one. It's hard not to get the warm-fuzzies when you stop and think about Duck Hunt. If we could only get a true sequel...

Number 9 - Bionic Commando

Bionic_Commando_NES_ScreenShot1.jpg

Capcom completely reimagined Bionic Commando for the NES, and it couldn't have come out any better. The arcade version of Bionic Commando wasn't very fun at all, but the NES version did almost everything right. At a time when most NES games were about running and jumping on enemies, Bionic Command completely flipped gameplay around. Rad Spencer couldn't even jump, and if you tried to fall onto an enemy's head, you were done for! There's still nothing quite like swinging about the game's various locations, kicking enemies in the head, and grabbing power-ups with your bionic arm. One of the toughest games on the NES, but a classic nonetheless.

Number 8 - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

Mike_Tysons_Punch_Out_NES_ScreenShot1.jpg

Talk about Nintendo really capitalizing on a well-known personality. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is one of the most infamous games from the NES library. For whatever reasons, it seems like everyone that had an NES either owned this game, or borrowed it from a friend. It had Mike Tyson in it, how could you not be interested?! He was absolutely huge at the time, and anything with his name on it was going to fly off shelves. Little did we know that Nintendo's arcade-to-NES adaptation would prove to be one of the most unique and addictive fighting games on the market. Almost everyone has a classic story about taking down one of the game's many opponents. Plus, who didn't put some of the old secrets to use for the Wii update? The original Punch-Out!! will forever live on, thanks to a cast of fantastic characters.

Number 7 - Kirby's Adventure

Kirbys_Adventure_NES_ScreenShot1.jpg

This was one of the last titles to come out on the NES, and it also happens to be one of the sweetest. Nintendo really stretched the barriers of what the NES could do with this one. While the gameplay was top-notch, Kirby's Adventure is most important because of how it changed Kirby's life forever. Now, instead of just sucking up and spitting out enemies, Kirby could copy the fighting abilities that his enemies had. This was a game-changer that has stayed with Kirby to this very day. Without Kirby's Adventure, who knows where Kirby would be today!

Number 6 - Mega Man II

mega_2.png

Mega Man II is, and will probably forever be the best entry in the classic Mega Man series. It's hard to find anything wrong with this game. We went from having 6 robot masters to 8, which would become the series' staple from there on out. Mega Man now had much better control than in the first game. Level design, while easier this time around, felt much more sensible. Best of all, Mega Man 2 has one of the most memorable soundtracks of any NES game. If you can play Mega Man 2 without humming along to these outstanding compositions, then something is wrong with you!

Wondering what made it into the top 5? Well, our friends at GameDaily handled that one! Click here to check out their top picks!

How is Duck Hunt better than Castlevania? or Tecmo Bowl? or RC Pro-AM? or Wario's Freekin' Woods for that matter?

Mega Man 2 yes!

Agreed Duck Hunt is not better than Battletoads or Tecmo Bowl.

Aw, yes, well, I just noticed that GoNintendo and GameDaily are "partners".

I guess this explains why RMC has yet to refuse to post GameDaily's pointless lists.

I think I've found two of those lists interesting.

so, this list has zelda 2, but no original zelda. how do you expect to be taken seriously? i also would have added north vs south. if you haven't played that gem, you need to search it out.

Did GameDaily find a way to stretch the Top 5 NES Games out over 42 pages, like they do with every other list?

Zelda II at number 5... And yet RMC still refused to admit that any 3D Sonic games are any good. Sorry guys, but Zelda II was a mess of a game that tried too hard to be 3 different genres at once, and failed at all of them.

MegaMan 2, while good, is HIGHLY overrated. I can see MM3, as that one actually is still good today, but MM2 just didn't click for me. Nostalgia blinders for people's first MegaMan game perhaps?

Turtles 2 was actually my least favorite of the Turtles Quadrilogy. I still can't get over the lack of variety in enemies in it, the music was largely forgettable, and the bosses were pretty uninspired aside from Krang and Shredder. Only thing the game has going for it is its the only game in my knowledge to have Lt. Granitor as a boss.

Turtles 3 was much better, in my opinion. Castlevania 3 beats Duck Hunt here too. Also, Metroid wasn't really that good by itself, at least not #3. Super Tecmo Bowl was much better.

lol. True, like Totodile said. No matter how many lists like these people make, they never get new.

Duck Hunt is pretty awesome. I can't say whether it is better than Battletoads since I never played it before, but I guess I agree with the Castlevania one. But if I had to choose one of any of my Castlevania's to still own, it'd be Dracula's Curse.

The list was pretty damn good until I got to GameDaily's part. Where the hell is the original LoZ? Even if someone happens to like Zelda II better, there's no reason for it to be excluded. And what about the original Super Mario Bros? Super FREAKING Mario Bros? Next time, I want my list just from GoNintendo.

Where are Chip&Dale:Rescue Rangers and Duck Tales?

And Megaman2 was cool, but too easy.. I would've picked Megaman4.

There is no definative "best of" list. You only have opinions that'll always be disputed forever and ever.

You can argue, but will it really make a difference?

Were all NES games played? You have a list of games, but is the listed solely based on games played, not all games total?

My top NES games would look different, but I doubt my opinions would do much. Personally, I choose games that I have the most fun playing, not just the games that "did it first" or the latest version released for the system, unless it's done better than previous games.

A pretty good list that I would agree with a lot of...I'd say most everything here has a right to be recognized as some of the best on NES...

Talk about being a hypocrite; you always bash that site for the negative things it has to say about Nintendo, then you go and do this. I don't get you sometimes...

I don't understand how doing this article is hypocritical.

I often do feel that GameDaily has somewhat of a slant against Nintendo. With that said, when they approached me about doing a Nintendo-related list, I definitely wanted to get involved. They're doing something pro-Nintendo!

Mad you post Game Daily lists and they get nothing but hate. Yet suddenly when you partner with them it's okay. Lame lists still remain lame.

@thisboywillbreak

Agree.

Game Daily is one of the most user-UNfriendly sites on the entire internet. Their "articles" are posted one paragraph per page so that way the user is forced to click on 10-20+ pages to view the entire thing. This is done for no reason other than to artificially increase their page views. This is the internet. They could easily post all of their lists as a single page entry. Instead they choose to use their current garbage format.

This would be the equivalent to RMC changing the GoNintendo format from 10 news postings per page to 1 news posting per page. You can bet there would be a massive uproar on the site if that happened (I know you wouldn't do that RMC, I'm just making an example).

Take the top half of this list. RMC put games #10-6 in one news posting. He didn't make us click 5 different news postings to see the 5 different games. I'm not even going to bother clicking over to Game Daily because I know what to expect...5 games, one game per page.

Game Daily's user interface is utter garbage. I don't even know if their content is any good because as long as they have their site set up in this current format, I will NEVER read it.

Normally I really hate Gamedaily, but the rest of this list was all on one page, so that's a step in the right direction.

I do normally check links before I click them, though, because when they are Gamedaily I just ignore it. I hate having to click through page after page to read a sentence on each of them.

Decent list, and even if this is your guys' opinions, leaving off the original Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. just seems sacrilegious.

Everyone shut up. The original Zelda is so over rated I sometimes do tiny sicks in my mouth when people say it's one of the best games of all time. Zelda 2 is a far better game. Wake up and realize it please.
