Filed Under: Wii, Nintendo in general
And just like that, another attempt from Nintendo to block homebrewers and piracy has crumbled. It didn't take very long, with a solution popping up just about 24 hours after we got first word of the update. Of course, going about this process voids your warranty, but if you're looking for a way to reinstall your homebrew apps, I'm pretty sure you didn't care about warranties in the first place! Thanks to SL92 for the heads up.

For people like me who own an old Wii, I'd say do whatever you want. You probably won't get any warranty repair service after a year of ownership.
Frankly, I'm surprised that they haven't bricked illegally modded consoles... but they would probably have to be able to prove that a console was modded or else be at risk of massive lawsuits. Maybe not worthwhile?
Also, it would really only hit the "newbie" pirates because others know not to download an update until it's been checked.
My guess is that they hope the current "annoyance" strategy is enough to deter casual pirates, knowing that there is probably no way to stop the serious ones at this point.
Why should they just "give up"? Are you advocating piracy or something, which is illegal?
Instead of trying to squash piracy, they should release those games they're sitting on. If they had released enough good games, I wouldn't have modded my console.
@Scarpine
Hey, that's actually how I learned about back-ups. Through a link on this site. Funny, rite?
HackMii is actually against piracy, and hacking the Wii itself is more or less in the gray zone, depending on if you're just softmodding or not. Plus anyone who owns a Wii and is interested in the subject knows about HackMii anyhow. Not only that, but any other sites to link to for the news would be linking to HackMii anyhow.
@AdolRed
Why not play them on PC emulator then? The resolution is higher, it runs smoother, more options for controllers (I have five different controllers for PC gaming alone, including a N64 and PS2 to PC converter), and you can easily get a cable to hook up any PC to any TV. And you don't have to worry about Nintendo patching your PC.
I never understood why people play illegal ROMs on modded consoles when PCs do it much, much better.
Mmm... Vanilla Wii...
becuase of superior gamecube pad.
i know that there is an adapter for pc(someday i'll buy one i swore last year...
but still playing on a nintendo console have some magic...
I agree that VC games pricing is silly.
BUT the VC games are not for old gamers like me that spent 100 euros equivalent on Chrono Trigger import in the 90's
we already owns those games and prefer to play on the REAL consoles.
but for those people that are new to gaming world.
so for them paying 5 euros is worth the money.
anyway how many stupid people buy games for iphone?????
maybe iphone is a good cell phone (many say that nokia are best ones)
but is a HORRIBLE CONSOLE.
so for those people that know nothing about gaming VC pricing is ok.
Why? Cause Nintendo is sitting on it's laurels with a bunch of games I would gladly pay for, but don't release them.
So I'll get it another way.
I'll do the exact same for the DSi when it's hacked too.
I don't pirate games though. I support the companies that makes games I want, just when it comes to old games, give it to me now, or I'll find them for free.
:@ <--me mad
Zoom it 20X and you'll see that this is what these hackers just did to Nintendo's a******.
Anyway, no hair off my back since I'm not dumb enough to update. I don't give 2 f*** about the Wii's feature besides that the fact that it plays Wii and GameCube games.
Some of us would rather play them on our TVs and not our computers.
Also, that didn't take long. Not that I thought it would. The hacking community is always two steps ahead of Nintendo.
Some people just want to play on their TV, not a computer.
Or simply because they can.
Also, I have no desire to buy extra things for my computer to play emulators so I can play games with a controller when I can just play with my own stuff as is.
Also, in my case, I have a Mac. I can't even have several emulators on it without them failing.
@terryxlr
This. I knew about modded Wii's beforehand, but, GoNintendo gives me lots of news about it anyway.
@Inneverate
Homebrew =/= Piracy. Thanks for generalizing.
Also, I don't know why breaking someone's Wii is a valid punishment.
Breaking something you bought legally, just to spite you? Real neat.
