If you become Best Friends with someone online, you will be able to chat with them, regardless if you are in the same town or not. View it as personal chat window, as you can even look at messages you have exchanged before.
That's a major win for New Leaf. I'll definitely be doing a lot more online play this way. Can't wait to play this game!
