Penny's Big Breakaway director on transitioning from 2D to 3D design
That's a whole extra D!
Penny’s Big Breakaway is a modern throwback to classic 3D platformers of the 90s, but its team actually had more prior experience in the 2D realm. Directors Hunter Bridges and Christian Whitehead both came to the project after working on Sonic Mania, a game fans praised for being true to its sidescrolling roots. With Penny however, they knew they wanted to take things in a new direction from the beginning.
In a new interview with Inverse, Hunter Bridges elaborates on the challenges involved with going from one gameplay style to another. According to him, this meant a pretty big shift in the way the team approached enemies and level design:
“Does my approach to making levels translate to three dimensions? For example, in 2D, I don’t like using bottomless pits. I don’t find a need for them when I can make several other interesting scenarios. But with 3D, the ‘void’ is unavoidable. The bottomless pit is the enemy in the game.”
“You look at Mario and the Goomba. The perfect enemy in 2D, but in 3D you can just walk around them.”
We’ve seen plenty of franchises make the transition from 2D to 3D over the years, some with more success than others. It sure seems like design concepts need to be adjusted in the process, as simply copying over elements from 2D to 3D is much tougher to make work. Bridges explains that this philosophy led to an emphasis on momentum and staying in the air, which can be seen throughout Penny’s Big Breakaway.
In the interview, Bridges also elaborates on the origins of the project and other behind the scenes tidbits. Click here to read it for yourself.
Pretendo Network fan group hoping to restore Wii U/3DS online services
Could the Miiverse rise again?
As of yesterday, all online services for the Wii U and 3DS are officially nonfunctional. Nintendo has decided that it’s not worth the effort to maintain their servers for outdated consoles, but this might not be the end. A group of fans has decided to take matters into their own hands.
Pretendo Network is the name of a new effort being spearheaded by a team of fans and software developers to allow players to experience Wii U and 3DS games online once more. When it’s ready, this will be an open source platform of custom servers, able to utilized within older games that could contact the Nintendo Network. Theoretically, it should work just like it used to, even allowing for services such as the Miiverse. Right now however, nothing is available, as the project is still in development.
Unfortunately, there’s no real timeline for when Pretendo Network will be online. They do have a full progress report to show you just how far along they are for various games and services. You can also donate some money to help further the cause. Nintendo may have shut down their servers, but as long as the fans are dedicated, there’s always another way!

Final Fantasy producer says it's "about time" for a Final Fantasy Tactics sequel
"We love Tactics as well."
Final Fantasy Tactics has been a fan favorite since its initial release on the Playstation in 1997. There’s also a lot of love for 2003’s Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (and its DS sequel), but the series hasn’t seen any real activity since then.
In a new interview with TheGamer.com, Final Fantasy producer and director Naoki Yoshida (also known as Yoshi-P) is confronted with the question of whether we’ll ever get another game in the Tactics series. Yoshida’s answer isn’t anything concrete, but it’s certainly positive! Check out what he had to say below:
“We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you’re going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team.”
“We love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”
If anyone at Square Enix has the clout to make a new Final Fantasy Tactics game happen, it’s probably the director and producer on recent titles like Final Fantasy XIV, XVI, and more! Yoshida says that Final Fantasy XVI wouldn’t make a good template for a new Tactics game, so it sounds like a sequel would be something wholly different.
If a Tactics sequel does come to fruition, it probably won’t see the light of day for years. Still, this might be the most positive news fans have received on the possibility in a while. Stay tuned, and keep hope alive!
Knuckles producer on giving more depth to Sonic side characters
Big the Cat's time is nigh
We’re just a few weeks away from the launch of Knuckles on Paramount+ on April 26, 2024. This spin-off series will mark Sonic the Hedgehog franchise’s first foray into live action television. With an overall runtime that’s longer than either one of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, the show should have plenty of time to explore characters like Knuckles in more depth than before.
In a new interview with Paste, executive producer Toby Ascher talks about the freedom allowed to him to go beyond the scope of the films with the Knuckles TV show:
“We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies. We knew that, with Shadow coming into Sonic 3 and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events. They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters. And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.”
“If something is working really successfully, and we have a really great story to tell, we’re definitely going to expand on it. I don’t think there’s any closed doors on future television, future seasons of Knuckles, so everything is wide open. I think it’s important to us that we’re not just making stuff to make stuff.”
Fans of Knuckles should have plenty to look forward to when this show premieres, as it’ll feature around three hours of Knuckles-centric goodness. With Shadow being introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, maybe we’ll get even more side characters from the Sonic universe in future installments!
Ascher also discusses the importance of maintaining the quality of the Knuckles show in comparison to the movie, and teases the possibility of a Sonic 3 and Knuckles Easter egg in the upcoming sequel. Click here to read more.
