Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was lauded by critics, with numerous outlets naming the game one of the best of the year. For whatever reason (we’re looking at you, Marvel’s Avengers…), it seems fans didn’t flock to the game as Square Enix had hoped, with the publisher saying sales of the game had undershot expectations.

The team behind Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was certainly sad to hear those words, but they’re far from upset with how they tackled the game. In an interview with Eurogamer, Guardians of the Galaxy senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas spoke very highly of the game’s development, and the game itself.

“I have no regrets. We did everything we could but that’s the reality of the market… And let’s not forget it’s a new IP. Even though we say all ‘Guardians [of the Galaxy] are known’, it’s still a new IP [in the video game market]. It could be a lot of people don’t even know that the game is out yet, or they’re not sure exactly what it is. It’s like anything. We always want to sell trillions but it’s not always necessarily as easy as that.”

It is worth noting that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has seen an uptick in players since Square Enix commented on the game’s slow sales, but it appears the majority of people checking the game out since then have done so through Game Pass.

In our opinion, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an absolutely fantastic adventure, and one that deserves to be in the Game of the Year discussion. Yes, that even goes for the Cloud version of the game, which is the only way to play on Switch. If you’re curious about that version, you can see some hands-on impressions here!

It's too bad the game didn't do as well as they hoped. I've heard it's great. I think the stank of the Avengers game didn't do them any favors.

Yeah, I really do believe the Avengers game made people stay away. Hell, I played the Avengers game and didn't like it, and when I heard about this, I automatically expected it to be the same kind of situation in terms of quality. I was completely wrong, and I'm glad I took some time to check the game out!

$60 is too much for a cloud game. I'll get it when it hits $30.

I played it on PS5 and had very low expectations. The trailers did nothing for me but I listened to a couple of journalists talk about how great it was and gave it a try.

The game is amazing. Probably my favorite experience in a comic book game since Spider-Man or Batman. Not due to the gameplay but the writing and character development was spot on.

If you're on the fence, I suggest playing this.
