Overwatch super fans might remember the first appearance of Vivian “Sojourn” Chase. She was teased as a character all the way back in 2016, yet here we are in 2022 and the character is just now getting an official reveal.

A number of fans had been clamoring for black female representation among Overwatch’s heroes, and they wanted to know why it’s taken so long for Sojourn to make her official debut. In an interview with The Verge, Blizzard has finally explained their reasoning.

Art Director Dion Rogers offered up a two-fold response as to why it’s taken Sojourn so long to show up. To put it simply, Sojourn had story ties that held her reveal back, and as she’s the first black female hero, the team wanted to do things right.

“We created this timeline, and we wanted Sojourn — especially since she’s the first Black female character of the game — to not just be a random addition to the game. She had a deep, lore connection to the game world. She moves the storyline forward when she’s introduced.”

That attention to detail is found in every facet of Sojourn, including her overall design. According to Rogers, the team took inspiration from actor Angela Bassett and athlete Serena Williams when crafting the character. Knowing that, you can certainly see the influences in both design and abilities.

Fantastic to see more representation. It’s also encouraging that, unlike some forces in society, Blizzard knows what a woman is, and isn’t afraid to shout it out to all society. Adult, human female.
