Shinichiro Tomie might not be a household name for gamers, but there’s no doubt you’re familiar with his work. Tomie was the writer behind all of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, and he even contributed to the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon TV movie. If you’ve played any of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games, you were completely surround by Tomie’s work.

There hasn’t been a new Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game in quite some time, yet the franchise remains popular thanks to the amazing story and writings from Tomie. There are plenty of moments that stand out to fans around the world, but which of those are most important to Tomie? Connor from Seafoam Gaming (and friend of the site!) had the chance to chat with Shinichiro Tomie to find out.

As for my favorite scene, it’s hard to pick one since I love them all. I guess if I had to pick, it would be the credits scene from the ending of Explorers. Meetings and partings are common themes of the series. When development started, I thought of expressing those themes through bubbles at the beginning and end of the game. I was motivated to give thanks to every name that appeared in the staff roll at the end of the game like this. They were also difficult scenes though, I had to keep pushing the programmers for the bubbles to move. People around me said it was my magnum opus.

Also, I know you didn’t ask, but my second favorite scene is the ending of Gates to Infinity. When the protagonist ascends into the sky at the end, the way their partners look up from the ground is so heartrending. What really satisfies me and leads me to love this scene is later on when you learn the strength it took for them to keep looking up.

This is just one small excerpt from a huge interview with Tomie about all things Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, plus much more. You can find the full interview here.

I tried submitting this story through the built-in story tips submitter, but the functionality apparently either doesn't work or wasn't checked. Guess I'll need to either rely on emails or get a Twitter account for submitting tips.

Anyways I'm glad to see this interview being spread online. The last time Tomie gave an interview was for an Iwata Asks segment in 2013 for Gates to Infinity on 3DS.

Huge thanks for sharing this! Considering I joined GN literal days before I picked up Gates to Infinity, the game that got me started on this quest, it's a funny bookend in a way to have things evolve to the point I got to interview the man who changed my destiny.

Hoping this leads to Tomie realizing of his western fanbase, and thus, motivating him to keep on working hard!
