Sonic Origins versions and pricing are rather confusing

Sonic, are you trying to nickel and dime us?

After a few days of ratings and artwork popping up, SEGA finally confirmed that Sonic Origins is indeed on the way, and it’s launching June 23rd, 2022. It was nice to see the collection wasn’t cancelled, but what’s not so nice is how SEGA is releasing this game.

The official website for Sonic Origins includes the above chart showcasing the various versions this game will have. As you can see, there are 5 different options to pick from, and all of them include different content. Odder still, things like camera controls and character animations are tied to specific versions of the game, which seems like a really strange decision.

As far as pricing difference between the standard and digital deluxe options, we have that info below.

  • Standard Edition: $40
  • Digital Deluxe Edition: $45

As of right now, we don’t know the pricing on the Premium Fun Pack or the Classic Music Pack. Hopefully we get those details soon.

I'm spoiled by Nintendo's DLC strategies, but I can't stand being nickel and dimed like this for games. Feels so sleazy to me.

It's certainly weird, had me confused for awhile but I think I have it now. Still, certainly a terrible way to advertise the different editions.

If you pre-order the digital deluxe edition, you get everything.

If you just pre-order the standard edition you get an early unlocks for mirror mode and 100 bonus coins, both available in game for free, you just don't have to work for it. The only paid dlc you get for pre-ordering is the letterbox background.

If you didn't get the digital deluxe and want the rest of the content, you'll need to buy the premium fun and classic music packs, and additionally if you didn't pre-order you'll need to play through the game to unlock mirror mode instead of having it unlocked from the start.

So... they really could have avoided this by saying pre-orders get early unlocks and a letterbox background, and that the digital deluxe includes the Premium Fun Pack and the Classic Music Pack content which will be detailed separately at a later time. Including 5 different columns on the website looks really bad and is super confusing.

Edit: When I have to write 3 paragraphs worth just to explain their chart, you know they messed up.

I think Sonic's had it so hard for so long the poor guy doesn't know his own value.

It's so sad to see what Sega has become.

Can you imagine if Nintendo had fallen so low they locked things like "character animation for the main menu" behind a separate DLC?

It's weird, but I don't care. I'm buying it day one on Switch and PS5.

Predatory release, I knew Sega had become a bit of a joke, but I didn't expect they'd reach Ubisoft levels of sleazy.

Either way: It's too pricey for a download only game.
I thought the same about the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun collection and I am glad that I've waited since my physical version just arrived the other week.
