Just a few days back, Nintendo announced that the Super Mario Bros. animated movie from Illumination was getting delayed to Spring 2023. That means we now have a full year to wait for this one to hit theaters. What are we to do until then? Well, dig into some rumors, of course!

Noted industry insider Jeff Grubb is at it once again with Nintendo leaks, and this time he’s turned his focus to the Super Mario Bros. animated movie. According to Grubb, there may be some elements of the film that longtime fans will have to prepare themselves for.

First up, it appears the movie is going to include a few musical numbers. Truth be told, that’s not really a big surprise when it comes to animated films, as that’s been the norm for decades now. Sure, not every animated movie has musical numbers, but it’s more likely than not. That said, Mario fans probably weren’t expecting to see the Mushroom Kingdom break out into song and dance.

Second, and perhaps more notably, it’s said the film is going to give both Mario and Luigi slight redesigns. We can expect to see Mario and Luigi to appear in more muted versions of their iconic red and green color schemes at the start of the film, and then they’ll transition to the more vibrant colors we know and love.

Finally, many have been wondering just what kind of look the animated film will have, as we haven’t seen any official art or teaser trailers yet. According to Grubb, fans can expect a visual style somewhat close to the Hotel Transylvania series.

There’s much more to this supposed leak than what’s mentioned above, but it goes very, VERY far into spoiler territory. This includes the movie’s full plot, details on characters to appear, a special narration to kick the film off, and a LOT more. As long as you don’t mind some potential SERIOUS spoilers, you can find the full discussion at the 1:02:50 mark in the video below.

I'd say it's more unlikely that an animated movie is also a musical. That's mostly a Disney thing. Most of Illumination's films are not musicals for example.

This is Miyamoto. I hope you look forward to meeting elder Waluigi played by Steve Buscemi in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This will be your first look into the Mushroom Kingdom. I hope you keep an eye out for other surprises behind doors.

Illumination: So we were 75% complete with the movie, on track to meet our December release date when one day Miyamoto-san Zoom'd in and said "What if there were musical numbers?" and we couldn't say no to the man.

I have absolutely no faith in this being any good, not with Illumination being involved.
