Sometimes you get some news that is both happy and sad at the same time. That’s exactly what we have to share today, and it pertains to both the Wii U and Switch. You can probably guess which platform is going to be saddled with sadness.

Thanks to Nintendo’s Fiscal Year 2022 results, we know the Switch has managed to sell over 107 million units worldwide, making it a phenomenal success in its 5+ years of existence. If you needed that figure put into a bit more perspective, we can use a Wii U stat to make the point.

In its entire lifespan, the Wii U managed to move over 103 million units of software. Just let that sink in. From launch day to death, the Wii U moved roughly 103 million game units. The Switch, in terms of hardware sales, has surpassed that figure with 107 million. The fact that the Switch sold more hardware units than the Wii U could move software is mind-boggling, and really shows just how unloved the Wii U went.

Also, just in case you needed a reminder, the Wii U sold 13.5 million hardware units since launch. I think it’s safe to say the Switch has done just a tad better than that.

I don't see much sadness here, to be honest.
I loved my Wii U and all, and of course I wanted it had performed better... but it's revigorating to know Nintendo learned from most of its mistakes, and the result is paying off.
