UPDATE: With this story blowing up, Street Fighter 5 composer Daniel Lindholm has clarified his statement. Lindholm says his original comments were “playful hypothetical thinking,” and nothing more than his opinion. That said, Lindholm says his source that he originally mentioned is an “independent third party.”

Furthermore, the official social media account for Bruce Lee comment on the matter with the following.

We never made any comments of this nature. We have no idea who Daniel Lindholm says his ‘close friends’ of the family are, but his comments are entirely false surrounding the Bruce Lee family.

Fei Long first appeared in the Street Fighter franchise back with Super Street Fighter II. The character is an action film star from Hong Kong, and pretty much anyone can see that he was greatly inspired by Bruce Lee. According to a Street Fighter composer, that’s why we’ll never see Fei Long in the franchise again.

During a Q&A about Street Fighter, Street Fighter 5 composer Daniel Lindholm addressed the topic of Fei Long, and shared some insight as to why it’s extremely unlikely for the character to appear down the road.

A character that I know we won’t see at all — there’s been a lot of discussion about it — I mentioned earlier a character I would like to rewrite the music for would be Fei Long.

I do have other sources — not only Capcom, but friends of mine in the U.S., who are very close friends with the Lee family — and they have basically said that any kind of resemblance to Mr. Bruce Lee is now omitted for comedic effect, comic stuff. It needs to be honourable.

That’s why we won’t see Fei Long again. Ever.

This isn’t a comment direct from Capcom themselves, but it’s certainly pretty close to the source. This is definitely sad news for Fei Long fans, but maybe in time, the Lee family will change their opinion.

After Street Fighter 4, good. He was a menace in that game. I wouldn't call him a comedic figure, though.

I'd be shocked if the family legally found a way to enforce something like this, as parody is pretty well protected against any legal repercussion, especially when it's, you know, not actually Bruce Lee. Bamco has no problems using a significantly more "comedic" Bruce Lee inspired character still.

Wow, had no idea the composer was Swedish. Nice.
