Nowdays, the Big N is very careful with the tidbits they release about their timeless characters. Everything has to go through an insane amount of approval before it makes it out to the public. It wasn’t always that way, though. As a matter of fact, just a couple decades back, Nintendo was throwing out all sorts of random details without any explanation.

As discovered by the Supper Mario Broth Twitter account, an an officially licensed 2002 Burger King/Nintendo activity book included a trivia page about Donkey Kong. In that page, we learn that Donkey Kong was apparently born in the UK. If you’re looking for more information than that, you’re not going to get any! The activity book doesn’t give any explanation for this reveal.

The best part about this tidbit is that the activity book also says Donkey Kong moved to Donkey Kong Island after. I guess this means Donkey Kong randomly found some island and named it after himself!

Does that mean Cranky was born in Japan?

That answer was probably down to Rare's involvement with the Donkey Kong franchise. I very much doubt that it's cannon. If anything, Nintendo are even more tight with key details, it probably wouldn't be allowed happen these days.
