Return to Monkey Island director/Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert has been dealing with a massive wave of harassment ever since Return to Monkey Island was revealed. Some people aren’t liking the art style for Return to Monkey Island, and they’ve decided to voice their displeasure by tormenting Gilbert on social media, and through his own blog.
In a new post on his blog, Gilbert has decided to stop talking about the game and shut down comments. It’s clear he doesn’t want to deal with the harassment anymore, and you can find his comment on the matter below.
“I’m shutting down comments. People are just being mean and I’m having to delete personal attack comments. It’s an amazing game and everyone on the team is very proud of it. Play it or don’t play it but don’t ruin it for everyone else. I won’t be posting anymore about the game. The joy of sharing has been driven from me.”
There’s certainly nothing wrong with not liking the art style of Return to Monkey Island or ANY game, but to take that distaste and turn it into abuse for the game’s creator or anyone involved with the project is absolutely inexcusable.

2y agoWhat? I think it looked great! People can be weird sometimes (even Miyamoto allegedly cringed over toon Link... And we all know how that design stood the test of time better than the follow up)

2y agoNot to make light of a serious situation, but I can't help but think of the last podcast episode with "You're not experimenting how I want you to experiment!" or whatever the precise quote was! Never in a million years would I harass someone over well anything really, let alone an art style for a video game. People need to go out and touch grass. Feedback is important but Gilbert went on record previously saying this was his vision. If you don't like it just don't play it. Vote with your wallet and have constructive discussions about why you felt that way.

But I tell you, the day we see a chibi style Metroid game is when people really are gonna loose it.
