Below is a set of clues for games that have a notable US release date anniversary (5, 10, 15, etc.) in the current month. See if you can figure out the title before clicking the blurred image to find out if you were correct! Head down to the comments when you’re finished and reminisce about the personal memories that were dredged up. Remember that these are going by the release date in the United States. Have fun!

August 1987

The first title in a series that continues to this day was released on the NES and stars a galactic bounty hunter NOT named Boba Fett. The Japanese Famicom Disk System version features three save slots to record your progress, but the NES version uses a password system instead. Does JUSTIN BAILEY ring a bell? One of the most notable things about this title was the multiple endings depending on completion time, including a “shocking” (for the time) revelation regarding the main character.

Another debut title in a beloved series introduced NES gamers to a vast world full of secrets to explore and enemies to defeat which was based on creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s experience as a young boy around Kyoto. Unlike the first game on this list, this title does make use a save slots to record progress and even features a “second quest” which can be accessed from the beginning by using a certain name for your character. The cartridge also had a unique color and was likely Goldmember’s favorite NES game.

**August 1992 ** This SNES title is a port of a very popular arcade beat ‘em up game from Konami. As the fourth numbered game in the series, this edition improved upon nearly everything from its predecessors and is still regarded as one of the best examples of the genre. Throw baddies at the screen and scarf pizza throughout the past and the future – all while jamming out to the iconic soundtrack and voice samples. Want a shot of nostalgia? Big Apple, 3 A.M.

The first appearance of the pink puffball was in this Gameboy title, even if he was white instead of pink. Developed by HAL Laboratory, it featured a star-studded crew who worked on the game including director/designer Masahiro Sakurai and then-programmer Satoru Iwata. Many of your favorite friends are here like Whispy Woods and King Dedede. The main character was originally named Popopo. Why not Topo Gigio?

Rare developed this N64 first-person shooter based on a popular spy franchise and featured the wonderful low-poly likeness of Pierce Brosnan without the drive-by fruiting. After a longer than anticipated development period, the game released two years after the movie it’s based on – and only a few months before the sequel to that movie. Despite low expectations, this game blew everyone’s doors off and became an instant multiplayer hit. It probably led to some fractured relationships from “screen-looking”. Seriously, there’s no way you could’ve known that I was sneaking up behind you, cheater!

Nintendo released this GameCube title in a popular franchise which was based around cleaning up a tropical island. The main gameplay element involved using a “backpack” to spray water in various ways, including traversal moves for platforming challenges – though there are stages that take that ability away. Interestingly, it’s the first directing credit for Yoshiaki Koizumi. The game was very well received at the time but is more divisive today. It’s probably due to the Chucksters because they can suck a wet fart.

A spinoff of the popular farming simulation series, this DS title still had all the Agronomy and relationship building you could want but added in RPG elements like dungeon crawling and crafting. You can grow crops on your farm, but it’s a good idea to put some in the dungeons as well since ripe crops will spawn Runes that replenish your stamina. The monsters in the dungeons can be tamed and brought to your farm to produce goods or help with field work. Farm, fish, fight, and f…fornicate with the eligible townsfolk in this twist on the established franchise.

Remember that galactic bounty hunter from the first game this month? Good, because Retro Studios developed this Wii title starring that same character, continuing the story established in the first two GameCube games from this arc of the overall story. Retro made heavy use of the Wii’s control scheme with pointer-style aiming and motion control puzzles. The story centers around Phazon and a doppelgänger of the main character. Double your pleasure, double your fun?

The second “Operation Rainfall” game to make its way over to the Wii, this RPG was developed by Mistwalker and was directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi – the original creator of Final Fantasy. Fellow Final Fantasy alum Nobuo Uematsu composed the soundtrack. The title is an action RPG, but also features tactical and stealth elements. Zael, the main character, can use destructible objects to his advantage in defeating enemies and take cover to break enemies’ lines of sight during the real-time combat. I’d make a joke about the name of the title being close to something else, but it literally is another way of saying Final Fantasy.

August 2017

This Ubisoft X Nintendo title for Switch leaked prior to E3 in 2017, which is frankly shocking considering it’s from Ubisoft. Everyone thought it was either a joke or a very poor idea if it was actually true. Turns out it was real – and also an excellent turn-based strategy game. Ubisoft’s character contributions spoof the Nintendo ones and aren’t nearly as grating as they were in other titles. Longtime veteran composer Grant Kirkhope produced another gem with the soundtrack in both the main game and the expansion DLC which featured other, tangentially related, Nintendo characters. Maybe the best thing about this game was Miyamoto packing heat to promote it.

These are always fun. I think this set was a tad easier than past ones, but no less fun for it!

A lot of these have such iconic boxart I could just glance at the blurred photo and guess right away.

I'd have to agree that these were easier than the last, but still a nice throwback!
