If you’ve been keeping up with trailers for Sonic Frontiers, then you’ve seen the return of Super Sonic. While Super Sonic has been a part of numerous Sonic titles over the years, we mostly see the powered-up version of Sonic as an end-game moment or a little bonus. Sonic Frontiers is handling things quite differently.

According to an IGN interview with Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto, you’ll have to be Super Sonic in order to defeat some bosses. You literally won’t be able to damage them at all without the power of the Chaos Emeralds, so don’t try!

“Normally in Sonic games you’ll encounter a boss and you’ll fight them as regular, blue Sonic. In Sonic Frontiers, there will be bosses that blue Sonic can’t even scratch. But if he collects and uses all seven Chaos Emeralds, he can become Super Sonic and then battle those bosses. Becoming Super Sonic will be the only way to fight them.”
