Many consider the ‘cold open’ sketch of Saturday Night Live to be the most important one. It’s the skit that is meant to hook viewers before the show actually kicks off, and last night’s cold open featured none other than Mario.

The sketch last night, called ‘So You Think You Won’t Snap,’ took on a game show format where people’s limits were tested with ‘horrible’ news. The contestants were supposed to remain calm and unaffected by the news that was delivered to them, and as you might guess, no one could manage that.

How does Mario play into all of this? At the 3:45 mark, the topic of the Super Mario Bros. movie came up, and it focuses on Chris Pratt’s portrayal of Mario. What does the faux contestant do in reaction to hearing the performance for the first time? I’ll let you watch the clip and find out for yourself!

I haven’t watched snl in over 15 years. Every now and then I’ll see a clip and it’s really awful.

Recently SNL has an unfortunate habit of parroting memes as a cry for relevance, and that's pretty much what Chris Pratt Mario has devolved into. It's actually a decent skit aside from scraping the bottom of the pop cultural barrel for a moment.
