Super Mario Odyssey celebrates a big milestone today, as it was released for the Switch five years ago, on October 27, 2017. Combining elements of several past Mario titles with countless new ideas and mechanics, Odyssey is something special for Mario fans. Its open world design and iconic locations like New Donk City have helped it stay relevant years after its release.

As of June 2022, the game has sold nearly 24 million copies worldwide, and of course won numerous awards from various gaming outlets. A success from every angle, we’re just hoping we don’t have to wait another five years for the next 3D Mario installment!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, IGN has put together a video featuring 172 little details that make Super Mario Odyssey so special. It’s a big game, and there are certainly tons of things to explore in its varied worlds. Let this video be a trip down memory lane, or some encouragement to go back and discover things you might have missed!

It's weird how Switch is the only console that has still felt so new to me. Like there's no way its more than 2 years old max.

Timeline of 3D Mario games, for context:
1996: 64
2002: Sunshine
2007: Galaxy
2010: Galaxy 2
2011: 3D Land
2014: 3D World
2017: Odyssey
2020: The Pandemic (yes, that’s relevant, as it is for all development timelines)

So yeah, it’s kinda weird there’s been no Odyssey follow-up, but it’s not THAT unprecedented. Surely there’s hope for 2023…right?
