SEGA says the Sonic franchise has moved 1.5 billion units
What does that equal in chili dogs eaten?
SEGA has been running with Sonic ever since 1991 when the Blue Blur arrived on the SEGA Genesis. Since then, millions of Sonic fans have snatched up multiple games over the years, and that’s help SEGA reach an incredible milestone with the franchise.
According to SEGA’s most recent financial report, the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has reached a staggering 1.5 billion units moved. We’re using the word moved instead of sold due to how SEGA has calculated this number. While all of Sonic’s paid games are indeed included in this figure, it also adds in downloads of free-to-play Sonic mobile games.
To put things in perspective, Sonic Dash has been downloaded over 500 million times alone, so these mobile efforts make up a massive chunk of the overall figure. While something free will definitely move more than something with a price tag, this is still an unbelievable achievement for the Sonic franchise. If anything, Sonic is bigger nowadays than ever before!
